MISHAP-ON BAR AT SUMNER.

YACHT BREAKS ADRIFTAr. accident, fortunately without serious consequences, occurred on the Sumner bar late yesterday afternoon. Three boats left Lyttelton earlier in the afternoon with the intention of crossing the Sumner bar. They were Snipe, with Mr T. Turner and a lady on board, and Sea Kid. manned by Mr A. T. Round, towing another yacht, Kiwi, which was empty. The tide was ebbing, . but Snipe niadu the crossing without difficulty. Kiwi however, touched the sand, with the result that under the added strain the tow-rope parted. Round thereupon decided that the best course he eouid adopt was to go on to Redcliff.; and secure a stronger tow-rope. Kiwi immediately drifted towards the broken water in the direction of the New Brighton spit, and it was then that the alarm vras sounded bv those on' shore. Turner in the meantime had moored his boat at Redcliffs. and was returning to Sumner when he noticed the phglrt of Kiwi.
