ASHBURTON. I FISHING. Owing to the dirty state of the Rangitata and Kakaia rivers during the weekend there was no fishing at either. The streams will not bo clear until about the end of this week. The poor state of the mouth of the Ashburton river is not conducive to good fishing. The river was in excellent order on Sunday afternoon, however, when one local angler, fishing between Ashburton and the mouth, landed 20 trout, the heaviest of which was 31b. Very few fish were taken at the Selwyn Huts on Sunday, when there was an uncomfortable wind and the fish did not rise. Abattoir Figures. The following stock were slaughtered at the Ashburton Abattoir last month: —Cattle, 123 (two condemned); calves, 6; sheep, 883; lambs, 185; pigs, 44. Personal. Dr. W. R. By burn and Mrs Kyburn are spending a holiday at Sumner. Borough Council. The Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) presiding. There were also present Crs. F. Z. D. Ferriman, J. Thompson, W. H. Uundle, F. J. E. Smallbonc, J. Watson, H. R. C. McElrea, W. 11. Robinson, B. A. Collins, K H. Orr, and R. Kerr. It was reported that the amounts received since the previous mooting had totalled £328 Is 2d, the principal items being rates £.109 16s lOd, rents £l7*l 2s 7d, licenses £22 14s 2d, library subscriptions £6 15s. A circular was received from the Public Works Department, stating that it had been directed by the Unemployment Board to ask all local authorities to supply returns so that the Board might be able to show the amount of developmental work and reproductive work carried out during the calendar year ended December 31, 1932, with assistance from the Unemployment Fund. The information was intended to relate to Avork of that nature and not to maintenance of roads and other public services, and should include developmental and reproductive work done on farms. Numerous tenders were received tor the supply of material in connexion with the proposed extension of the high prcssuro water supply system. It was decided to send the tenders to the consulting engineer (Mr B. B. Catton) for his recommendation. Swimming Centre. At the monthly meeting of tho Ashburton Swimming Centre, hold last evening, Mr J. C. C. McLachlan (chairman) presided. • Advice tvus also received from tlio Council that the annual meeting of Centre delegates would bo bold at Napier on February 21. It was decided to ask Mr D. P. Lindsay (Christchurch) to represent the Ashburton Centre. A ruling on the question whether a girl who had won the Centre women's championship last year was eligible to contest the intermediate girls' championship this year, was received from tho secretary of tho- New Zealand Couneil (Mr Baxter O'Neill), who stated that if the girl had contested the senior championship beforo tho intermediate championship was decided, sho would not be eligible. The rule as to intermediates not taking part in a senior championship applied only to tho New Zealand championships. The matter waa one for tho decision of the Centre. The Methven Swimming Club wrote disapproving of tho method of Centre handicapping, alleging that an up-to-dato record,of swimmer's times was not kept, and that the hendicapping for tho same Taeea at different carnivals was not consistent. It was decided to reply that a record was kept, and that swimmers were handicapped according to tho times they sent in. It was resolved that, all times submitted for intcr-club carnivals should bo certified by the club handicapper. The following officials were appointed for tho championship events at the Ashburton Swimming Club's carnival cn Saturday (for which there are ovor 200 entries): —Timekeepers: Messrs S. Madden, H. Milsom, N. Eobilliard, and G. Bowman; diving judges: Messrs A. E. Fitzgibbon, D. A. Lawson, J. McTiguc, and A. J. McCallum; swimming judges: Messrs W. Hunter, W. H. Woods, and M. C. Knox. It was agreed to write to tho recently formed Mount Somers Swimming Club offering to take swimmers and officials to Mount, Somers to assist with a carnival on a date to bo suggested by tho club. MOUNT SOMERS. Rain fell on 11 days during January, totalling 303 points, compared with 253 points for the previous January. A maximum fall of 104 points was recorded on January 30. There were two frosts, the maximum being tiirco degrees on January 24. Weather conditions during the past fortnight have been unpropitious for the harvest, and an immediate return to settled conditions is desired to s ivw many of tho oat crops now in stook from rotting. A north-west gale on Wednesday night did much damage t-o ripp crops, shaking the grain and breaking the heads of many heavy crops. The gale also did much damago in gardens and orchards, many fruit trees being stripped, and shrubs and dowel's considerably buffetted. Mr R. McCallum, who has been an inmate of the Ashburton Hospital,' was discharged last week. The Rev. G. and Mrs Hughes, of Timaru. who have been camping in the Ashburton Gorge, returned to Timaru last week. Miss W. Nell ("Cheviot Bills." Cheviot), who has been visiting friends in the district, returned north yesterday. HINDS. A tennis team from Willowby plarod a friendly match at Hinds on Saturday. Mr and Mi's Drury and their son (Christchureh), who hare been the guests? of Mrs R. A. Grigg, "Singletree," Alford Forest, have returned home. RUAPUNA. Members of the Kuapuna Tennis Club visited Ashburton and played a friendly match with the St. Stephen's Club, resulting in a win for St. Stephen's. Overcast weather has prevailed during the week. Misty rain, totalling fourteen points, fell intermittently during Friday night and during Saturdayarid Sunday. RAKAIA. A BocJial in aid of the funds of the Haknia Cricket Club was held in St. Mark's Schoolroom On Saturday even* inji, when there was a good attendance.
