With several important buildings now in the eourse of erection and with others for which tenders have been already called, or which are to be called in the near future, only one firm of any consequence will remain before there is completed the entire rebuilding of the damaged part of the town. The buildings now in hand inclade the Bank of Xcw Zealand, the fire station, the Cosy Theatre, Dalgety '& branch, and the Grand Hotel; and among the buildings shortly to be begun are Williams and Kettles, the National Baal:, and a I large new theatre and cabaret. The j total number of restoration or rebuildj ing contracts for work costing £l3O or [ more is about SO; 12 eoot between £SOOO ! and £13,000. The amount spent on the ' replacing of former wooden buildings j with reinforced concrete buildings is £BO,OOO.
