CANADIAN RAILWAYS.
A CONSOLIDATION PROPOSAL. (UKITED PKKSS ASSOCIATION-B3f ELICTiIO TILEGJUPE—COPVBIOHT.) TORONTO, January 16. The consolidation of the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways into one system, under one management, and the reduction of railway mileage to the country's actual needs, was urged by Mr E. W. Beatty, President of the Canadian Pacific Railway, addressing the Canadian Club on Mondav. He said control and management should be accompanied by a proper measure of responsibility on some agreed basis, either by the Government to the Canadian Pacific and its shareholders, or by the Canadian Pacific to the Government in reliet of th« railway burden. CALGARY'S OBLIGATIONS. RESPONSIBILITY OF GOVERNMENT. CALGARY (Alberta), January 16. Charges that tho Dominion Government had defaulted in refusing gold at par to Calgary to meet its debenture obligations were, made in a resolution passed on Monday by the General Board of the United Fanners ot Alberta. The resolution will be submitted to the general convention on Tuesday. It endorsed Calgary's stand in refusing to pay the adverse United States exchange, and declared that the money was a "racket."
