A STATE LOTTERY.
RELIEF OF DISTRESS. | I SUGGESTION TO CITIZENS* COMMITTEE. of humbugging about with' this business as wo are doing, let us seriously consider the holding of a State lottery as a means of relieving distress. The ironical part of the whole thing is that wo are sending money away to Australia and the Irish Free State, where lotteries are legalised, instead of keeping it for a good purpose in the Domiuion," said Mr J. W. Crampton to members of the committee of the Citizens' Relief Association last evening. "It is no use beating about the bush. Even the Churches have their raffles/' continued Mr Crampton. Mr J. K. Archer interjected that a largo number of the Churches were not in favour of raffles, and had nothing whatever to do with them. "Bankrupt This Week." Mr W. W. Scarff: Our director has told us that we will be bankrupt this week. I have seen money going out' of the country week after week for lotteries, and it should remain here. However, we aro barking up the wrong tree. The Government should give us a substantial sum to enable us to carry on the work. If the Government stops tho meat ration, where will wo be? We should consult the Mayor about this matter again. Mr Archer said that the Mayor was giving serious consideration "to the situation. All tho talk of money flowing out of the country was moonshine. Just as much would be sent away if the Government held a lottery. Mr Scarff said that once he had been very much against such means of raising money, but if aero clubs, cricket clubs, etc., used art unions, thero was no reason why they could not be used for the relief of distress. The chairman (Mr George Harper), Mr Archer, and tho director (Mr J. W. Woodbury) were appointed to wait on the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) and discuss with him some means of raising a sum for the relief of distress.
