MAN DROWNED. CANOE SWAMPED IN RIVER. '.rutin ASSOCIAHOJf TILEGRAU.) WHANGAREI, January 16. At an inquest held at Kaitaia this morning a verdict of accidental drowning was returned concerning John Youngstqn, 24, single, who, with a companion, occupied .1 canoe which was swamped in the Awa.nui river jesterday. Youngston, who was unable to swim, became submerged. The other man, Kelly, got his mate ashore after desperate efforts, but artificial respiration was futile. Youngston, who had tramped from Greymouth, in search ot work, is believed to have relatives at Mount Albert, Auckland. YOUNG MAN FATALLY SHOT PULLING GUN THROUGH FENCE. VrBESS ASSOCIATION TILCIiIkM.; TE KUITI. .January 16. Oswald Campbell Johnstoue. --■ son of a well-known farmer at Piopio, was found dead with n gunshot wound in his chest at 9 p.m. on Saturday. He left home at 7 o'clock to shoot hawks. His mother, becoming anxious, a search was made, and the body was found on one side of a fence and the gun on the other, half a mile from the home. The gun evidently discharged when being drawn through the fence. At the inquest held on Sunday a verdict of accidental death was returned. NECK FRACTURED. MAN'S DEATH IN HOSPITAL. (riI«SS ASSOCIATION TILSJRU! ) AUCKLAND, .January 16. The death of Samuel Flavell, aged 09, of Northcotc, occurred in the Auckland Hospital 10-night. Flavell fractured his neck on November 1, but, net realising the seriousness of the injury, ho continued to walk about. Six weeks later he was admitted to hospital, where ho remained strapped to. a steel irame.
MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED. (llltOS ASSOCIATION ItLlQii.il.) NEW PLYMOUTH. January 16. An anaesthetic was administered in the street to a young man, Alex. Campbell, an employee at the Waitara Freezing Works, who, when riding a motorcycle to-night, crashed into a New Plymouth tramcar. He suffered a compound i'racture of the right leg below tho knee, a double fracture of the l-'ght thigh, a severe gash on the right thigh and facial abrasions. He was admitted to hospital. RIVER DRAGGED BY POLICE. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TBLEUJtAW ) WANGANUI, January 16. Dragging operations were carried out without result to-day by the police, who searched the river below Parakino, 20 miles from Wanganui, lor the body of Noel Gledhill, single, aged 29, of Wanganui, who disappeared in the river yesterday while bathing. BODY NOT RECOVERED. (rRE3S ASFOUIATIOK TELEGRAM.) GORE. January IG. Roy Bolger, IS, son of John Bolgd. Mntaura, was drowned in the Mataura river yesterday alternoou while bathing. The body has not yet been recovered. SAWMILL WORKER DROWNED. (PRESS ASSOLIATIOH TELEGJUU ) INVMICAIIGILL, January 16. Arthur Bates, 21, sawmill worker, was drowned while endeavouring -to swim the swift Waian river, near Tuatapere, on Sunday afternoon. A companion attempted to rescue him, but Bates sank. The. body has not ye,t been recovered. GANGER KILLED BY TRAIN. (MESS ASSOCUTIOX TBLIOSAMS.) MARTON, January 16. Standing aside to allow a mixed train to pass, near Greatford, on Saturday afternoon, a railway ganger, named Alexander Robert Ledingham, 01, married, was noticed by his mate to fall -forward, his head striking a truck. Ledingham was placed in the guard's van and removed to a private hospital at Marton, where he died yesterday. HEAD INJURIES. Robert. Brunton, aged 18, of 12 Dover street, St. Albans, was admitted to the Public Hospital yesterday afternoon with injuries to the head, received in a collision with a motorcar while riding his bicycle at the corner of Sherborne street and Edgoware road.
