The revived interest in gold mining recalls the fact that in the 'seventies a three-stamp quartz battery crushed quartz for gold in Dunedin for several years. Mr J. Campbell, of Port Chalmers, was then an engineering apprentice, and he assisted to erect the battery -a the vicinity of the Wharf Hotel and to work it after it was in operation. Th* battery was erected by the Provincial Council for tho purpose of assisting the goldmmers of that time by testing their samples of quart*: for its gold content. Tho quartz sent for testing arrived at the stamper in sackfuls, sometimes almost cart-loads, from all over the goldfields. There were also slack spelts when little or no material arrived for assaying. Mr Alves, a mining expert from Australia, was in charge of the outfit, which included a sm&U laboratory.
