TIMARU. LEVELS COUNTY. The Levels County Council's meeting yesterday was presided over by Mr T. B. Garrick, Commenting on the statement of ac counts for the fortnight ended December 21st, the chairman stated that on December 7th the debit balance amounted to £O9BI. The chairman stated that up to jciterday £1053 general and £43 special rates had been collected. The Audit Inspector notified that the grants made to the Pleasant and South Canterbury Returned Solfliers' Association branches must be charged to unauthorised expenditure under the Public Kevenues Act. The only method by which the work could be charged against the county fund was for the Council to undertake the supervision, employment, and payment of the men. The chairman said that the grants had been charged against unauthorised expenditure and it was too late to make any change now. Methodist Church. At the annual meeting of the congregation of the Woodlands Street Methodist Church, the I»cv. H. L. Fiebig presided. The annual report stated that the membership stood at 165. The statement of receipts for the year showed that £4lO had been received for Church work, and about £45 for missions. The total debt on the church property now stood at £523. After five years' service, Mr F. Metson had relinquished his position as choirmaster. Mr H. Fleetwood had been elected as his successor. Magistrate's Court Before Mr C. I?. Orr Walker. S.M., in the Timaru Magistrate's Court yesterday, judgment by default was given j for piaintiffs in the following undefended cases: —Commissioner of Taxes v. Michael Curtis, on a charge of driving a motor-car without a rear light, was ordered to pay costs 12s. On a similar charge Douglas Moore was fined ss, costs 10s. Lack's special, Leslie Waller. FAIRLIE. A meeting of the Mackenzie County Unemployment Belief Committee visas held in the Council Chambers, Fairlie. Present: —Messrs" W. Scott (in the chair), C. J. Talbot, F. J. Carter, W. Close, and J. Caskey. The chairman gave a resume of the work since the last meeting, referring to the finishing of the Cattle Valley camp and the possibility of starting a further camp. A letter asked that the unemployed of the district be allowed to appoint a representative cn the committee. This was agreed to. It was pointed out that, the loss of tools was serious from the Council's point of view, and that the secretary was responsible to the Council. The allocation of money oyer Christmas was discussed and it was agreed j that preference should be given through- ! out to the men with the most dependents. The annual meeting of the congregation of St. Columba's Presbyterian Church was held in the Sunday Schbol hall. The Be v. J. Fordyce presided. Mr C. W. Isitt, clerk, read the session re" port, which stated that notwithstand ing the financial difficulties of the past year the activities of the various organisations of the church had been ■ well maintained. Four elders had been ordained during the year—Messrs J. Caskey, T. B. Crampton, T. Monahan, and J. Trotter. The attendance at worship had been well maintained, particularly the evening service at Fairlie. The number of members on the roll was now 150. • Mr H. Stanks, secretary, read the report of the management committee, and Mr J. A. Fraser, read the balance-sheet. This showed that the church's fiance had gone back by the sum of £24. Reports from the various organisations of the church were read and adopted. The following new members were elected to the committee of management: —Messrs C. D. Gilling, J. Burt, J. Anderson, G. Giddings, and H. Mitchell. During the evening a musical programme was contributed, after which supper was served by managers. _ In concluding the meeting Mr Isitt proposed, arid Mr Trotter seconded, a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Fordyce, Miss Fordyce, and Mr George Fordyce, to the women of the congregation, and all who had worked for the good of the parish. The pupils of the Fairlie District High School held their annual' concert in the Aorangi Hall. There was a large audience, and the well-varied programme was enjoyed by nil present. During tho interval Mr C. D. Gillmg (headmaster) expressed appreciation at the large attendance. Mr Gilling also thanked the chairman and committee for their co-operation throughout the year, and the staff for their work. Mr Gilling made reference to the interest Mr Talbot took in thu Hchool, and stated that two dux medals had been given by Mr Talbot. Mr O. J. Talbot, on behalf of the committee, thanked Mr Gilling and his staff for the excellent programme they had prepared. Mr Talbot then presented tho dux medals as follows; Secondary department, Winifred Dick : urimary department, Crompton Lake. Cheers were given for the winners of tha medals, Mr Talbot, and the school staff.
