JUBILEE DINNER. MEMORIAL TO EDGAR WALLACE. (PROM OtJR OWW CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, November 1. The London Press Club celebrated its jubilee last Saturday evening, when a message from the King was read wishing the members "a, very happy evenLord Riddell, in the presence of Mrs Wallace, unveiled an oak <*air--a memorial to Edgar Wallace # In the middle of the back of the chair is the monogram of Edgar Wallace in gold «,d on either side of it are horses' heads. In addition to a coat of arms ... the crests of the two regiments m which Wallace served. Lord Riddell paid tribute to Edgar Wallace, and Mrs Wallace replied. . Mr Augustine Birrell, proposing ttitoast of "The Press Club," said he vas " ow 83 y ears a o c and he di<l DOt suppose that he had ever been in an editor's parlour or a newspaper office. To propose the health of the Press was like proposing the health of the world, the flesh, and the devil. (Laughter.) Tt was too big a subject for a man who was appr° acnin g tho en<J and wished to Vir- n (rood terms with the powers that might be. (Laughter.) 'He did not beHnvfl in the pessimists who said it would we been better to have lived 200 vears ago. 0f this he was certain, that thP human race improved. T ora Riddell replied, and Lord Burnham submitted "The Pioneers," apeakins of the great journalist! who hnd been members of the club during tho half-century e* fc» «xi«tone*.
