j AMBERLEY HOUSE. A lar;;e number of parents and friends of the school attended the annual prise-giving °n Saturday. Mr Derek Westenra, chairman of directors, welcomed Archbishop Julius and tho other visitors. He said that, although the school was passing through a, difficult time, tho future -was decidedly more promising. Ho wished to contradict a rumour that the school might close: on tha contrary, -with the cooperation of parents and old girls, the directors had every intention of carrying ou the school, keeping- it at tho highest possible standard of efficiency. Ho appealed to both children and parents to eiusc equal sacrifices for tho sake of education, and pointed out that in Miss Enderby thy had a splendid principal, who was doing- her utmost for tho school, with tho help of a .keen and able staff. The Jady principal, in her annual report, said that the numbers had shown little variation this year. Tho old girls remained vory loyal friends, and the reunion in tho autumn had been attended by a representative group of old girls, including some of the. first pupils, who were enthusiastic over tho improvements in tho school. The health of tho school has been consistently good throughout the year. Classes were held out of doors all the year round, to the great benefit of the health and work of the pupils. Tho personnel of the staff had changed slightly since last year. Dr. Winifred tiaward and Miss Westall for six months Uad each replaced IJiaa Nicholson, who was returning in January from a year's leave of absence. Miss Lettieo Loughnan took all <ho music of the school, ana had given a very interesting series of lectures on Eomo j of the work of the great composers, thus giving the girls a standard of taste founded i on knowledge, arid developing their critical | faculties. To teach tho girls' tho right use of leisure, tho libraries had been enlarged,' debates, ui-JcussioiiK, play readings, and informal dramatic pioductions had been held .and in the organisation of these the staff and girls had shown much zest and originality. In gymnastics, games, and sports tho year had been successful. The girls have shown yood styie and an excellent team spirit in their swimming and teams games, and the school had a long list of successes in matches against other schools. With a golf course at tho fates, and tho opportunity ot full membership of the Arnberley Club, much interest was taken in golf Inst season, flood work has b-ceu done in plain sewing, dressmaking, and cooking, and much interesting 'art work is on view in the studio. Tho work of tho school is hard and determined. The aim was matriculation, not because examinations were a. fetish, but because tho outside world demanded a hall-mark of achievement. A real spirit of endeavour and love of work were evident throughout the school and the standard of work was being steadily raised. Prizes were now awarded only for marks over 70 per cent, and SO per cent, for term work and examinations. Girls wero given satis, when they had won more than two pri7.es. Thai tiio school was Email did not matter. Everyone had to take her part. Everv giri from the senior prefect to the smallest junior was on occasion given responsibility, and each responded splendidly. "Thero is no need to preach noble sentiments to children," said Miss Enderby. "They aro born with splendid qualities. Give them a chance to develop them, and they will develop character. And what better can a school do for a child than to train it to work efficiently with brain and hand, and to uss its leisure wisely and intelligent ly. and so help it to form a fine character?" The prizes were then distributer! by Archbishop Julius, who compared talking schoolgirls to talking- to a river, for in a river thero were tho slugs and snails holding fast, to the rushes—tho girls content to ait. still, with no ambition. Then thero wero tho spidery thing 3 who rushed about on tho surface—tho jolly girls in the. middlo rchool without a care in the world; and lastly there wero the serious fish, the girls who worked steadily with a definite aim and eonrago to leap every obstacle and to go independent of the current. But better than al! these was the brilliant thing which they were growing into, the girl who dived into the river, took what she wanted - from it, and so away out into the world—alive and vital. He reminded tho girls of the sacrifice their fathers, and especially their mothers, were making for them Afternoon tea, which had oil been prepared by the pirls, was served in the dining-room. After tea the pupils t>resented scenes from Dickens's "Christmas Carol," well produced, well acted, and faithful in every detail to the dressing of the period. At the begtomci? of the proceedings horiouets wero presented to Miss Julius and "Miss Enderby by tho two smallest girls. - PRIZE LIST. Tho prize list was as follows: Form Prizes —V.B: L. Thomson. C. D. Somerset, acting-headmaster, referred to tho fact that no prizes were given this year, not entirely as an economic measure, but on the ground that prize-giving was educationally wrong. It was impossible to givo prizes to tho most deserving, and they usually went to the most gifted. The real prize was one that was available to every pupil—the prize of work well and honestly done, and every child could thereby bo a prize-winner. Mr K. D.
