I i I lie Banks Peninsula Racing Club's Spring Meeting, generally held at the cud of October at Motukarara, was, tins year, postponed because the heavy rain of the few days before the scheduled date made the course until for racing. Rutherford, wife of the manager of the Pacific Cable Company at Suva, who joined the Aorangi yesten lay en route to Bamfield with her husband, died at sea yesterday evening from heart failure. She was buried at sea at 8 o'clock this morning. CHRISTMAS TREE FETE. CHILDREN OF RETURNED SOLDIERS. Over 200 small children, of soldiers now dead or of ex-soldiers now in hospitals or sanatoria were entertained by the Christehurch branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association in the grounds of St. Michael's Church on Saturday afternoon. A similar gathering has been held each year for the last 12 years, the Association considering that it is one of its responsibilities to ensure that as great a measure of happiness as possible be brought to these children at the approach of Christmas. The children's mother." as well as blind soldiers and their wives were present. - Attractive presents, which evoked much admiration among the children were distributed from a Christmas tree by Father Christmas, and in addition ice-cream, fruit, and sweets were given out. A musical programme was provided by the Eeturned Soldiers' Association orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr H. G. Glaysher. The arrangements for the fete were under the supervision of Mr H. Fleck president of the Eeturned Soldiers' Association executive, assisted by Mr G. W. Lloyd and members of the executive and of the Ladies' Auxiliary. The Christmas tree was in charge of Mesdames "Fleek, J. S. Chisholm Lloyd, G. A. Hayden, F. T. Read, w! E. Leadley, E. Orchard, and E. M. Grant; the ice-cream stall was under the management of Mesdames A. H. Myers, H. Manson, E. W. Smith, A. jj. Emerson, E. F. "Willeox, and Misses Fleck and Eead, while afternoon tea was served by Mesdames E. Davies, L. TT. Powell, 3. S. Kelly. H. A. Bishop, L. J. Lewis, A. J.
