FOR THE NEEDY AND THE ORPHANS.

ROTARY CLUB'S CHRISTMAS ATPEAL. CONCERT IN HOSPITAL GROUNDS The Christmas appeal on behalf of the needy and of the orphans, organised by the Christehurch Rotary Club, will bo marked this year by a splendid example of publio spirit by the bands of the City. Eight bands —five brass, and three pipe bands —will contribute to the programme of the concert to be given in the Hospital grounds on Sunday afternoon. They will be marshalled in Cathedral square by Mr It. B. Hean, and will march off, the first (Dcrry'n Military Bund) at .2 o'clock, the remainder following at intervals of three minutes. The routo will be Worcester street and Oxford terrace. Selections will bo given by each band, and the large numbers that are expected to attend the concert can look forward confidently to a musical treat of the highest order, especially na the Dominion's champion band, the Woolston Brass Baud, will play a selection. A fine programme of choruses and Christmas carols will be given by the members of the Itoyal Christehurch Musical Society, whose contributions to past concerts in the hospital grounds always have given the greatest pleasure. Included in their contributions to Sunday's concert will be two choruses from "The Creation" (Haydn). The Society's conductor, Mr W. H. Dixon, at present is on a visit to England and his place will be taken by Mr A. G-. Thompson. It is, unfortunately, too apparent that distress due to unemployment is much more prevalent this year than last, and there is urgent necessity for the publio to respond to the ltotary Club's appeal as liberally as possible. On that response will depend how manv of the 2500 applicants the club wM be able to assist. In addition to Sunday's concert, there will be a street collection noxt Friday, December 23rd, and it is hoped that as a result it will be possible to bring a ray of hope and of Christmas jollitv into the homes of many. The children in the orphanages arc each to receive a Christinas card and a Christmas box of one shilling.
