FIRES.
— SCItL'K FENCE DAMAGED. Two of ihe Christchurch Fire Brigade's engines rushed from the Central .Station at 5 p.m. yesterday to the corner of Montreal street and Armagh street, in answer to ati alarm given by a man who had discovered that the .manuka scrub fence which surrounds Canterbury College tennis courts, in JFagley Park, was on fire. At the Park gates one of the engines turned back, and the other had to wait for five minutes until tho main gate could be unlocked. By that time the fire was practically .nit, a workman having torn the blazing scrub down, and prevented the flames from extending. The fire started on the western corner near Victoria lake, and the strong wind swept the flames through twelve yards of the high scrub before they were noticed. It is thought that the fire was caused through tho wind fanning a lighted cigarette butt into a blaze.
