WAR MEMORIAL.
ALLOCATION OF FUND, REPLY TO RETURNED SOLDIEBB* ASSOCIATION. "The statement that we have pled* a ourselves to spend no more than £sqm on a war memorial is quite incorrect and unwarranted," declared Mr (j eot Gould, chairman of the War Memorial Fund, when asked to comment yesterda. on the attitude of! the Chrigtehurch jj turned Soldiers' Association, which on Monday night decided to ask Mr G 0B](1 to make arrangements for the executivi to meet subscribers to the fund to di s . cuss with them at a public meeting it, final allocation. The statement roferred to by Sb Gould was made by Mr Q, 'ft' < jj oyrf who said that at a public meeting t i subscribers some time ago it was d e . cided that not more than £SOOO should be spent on a war memorial column n, Gould giving a definite assurance that such an amount would not be exceeded and that the balance would be used t» assist distressed soldiers. Mr Gould stated yesterday that auch a memoriul had been designed for tie Square, to be built at an estimated cost of £ 5000, and it had been said that tli, surplus might be available for the assistance of returned soldiers. No aits however, had been granted for this memorial by the City Council, and it was clear that this design would not bs the one ultimately adopted. "I hay, already told the Association that until we know what is to be done we eaiuot undertake to devote any of the money to any purpose other than that for whiea it was originally subscribed," added Mi Gould.
