* REQUESTS TO MINISTERS. A SYMPATHETIC HEARING. U'RIiSS JkSSOCIATIOX I'ELEUr.A.Si..I WELLINGTON, November 22. A deputation representing the organised unemployed of New Zealand, waited on the Hon. J'. G. Cobbo and the non. Adam Hamilton to place before them numerous matters. Chief among them was the riot sentences, in regard to which Mr Cobbo said quite a number had already been reviewed by fche Prisons Board, and pointed out that law and order must bo preserved. Eequests were made for sustenance without work, the placing of women on the same sustenance footing as men, the abolition of camps, the abolition of distinctions between town and country unemployed, full compensation for injuries, and action to prevont hardship by eviction from homes. "Mr Hamilton assured the deputation of the. Government's sympathy in their difficulties, but to give effect to the bulk of the requests would mean that the funds would not last long. He said that sustenance without work -was not in the best interests of the unemployed. It was not in the deputation's interests to attack the 4A Scheme, which was relieving the funds to a large extent. He defended the allotment scheme, and contended, with regard to sustenance for women, that they were getting fairly favourable treatment. It was not truo that tho Unemployment Board was coercing men into "scabbi7ig'' on their fellows in :iriy industry.
