CARLTON BRIDGE.

♦ AN UNSIGHTLY CRACK DEVELOPS. DEFECT NOT SERIOUS. Poople passing over the Carlton bridge have lor some time noticed that a crack has dovelopod in a corner of the south-west pior, just opposite to whore a similar fault occurred on tho other Bide of the bridge not long after it was opened. The oraek, which for most of its length is about half an inch wide, runs from tliq ground to tho railing of tlio bridge. In one place, loose mortar has broken away, leaving a ragged gap ol : about liin. Tho City Engineer, Mr A. It. Galbraith, said last evening that this crack was not a now development; it had been present for a eousiderablo time. "There is nothing serious about the crack, because it is in an ornamental part of the work ; but it is unsightly," saiil Mr Galbraith. "I anticipated that it would develop, and reported to that effect. I have been watching it, and 1 will inspect it again in tho niorning." Mr Galbraith said the bridge should havo been made with expansion joints. One had been put in on the downstream sido, and it might bo necessary to do tho same on the sido nowaffected. The bridge was opened on September 2!) Mi. 1020.
