HEART OPERATIONS.

I • KCKHIAN DOCTOR'S AMAZING EXPERIMENTS. LONDON, November 7. ... -w .. -..p.;rations oil tlie human heartare foreshadowed by the extraordinary experiments which Dr. Brucliinenko has performed on dogs. The hearts of 13 have been dissected by him in the last two years, and still survive in normal ' health, says the Moscow correspondent of the "News Chronicle." The heart of one dog was sown in 17 places by Professor l'crcbinski, assisted by Dr. Brucliinenko's "artificial heart,'-' ■which consists of a circulation pump connected with tho vascular system. After the heart has been disconnected a special chemical substance is injected aud prevents the blood from congealing' for many hours during the preliminary operation and while the heart is being linked up again. In a recent terrifying experimental operation, a dog's heart was severed and replaced by the artificial "heart," and a second apparatus replaced its lungs, oxygenating the blood. Although the shock may kill the dog, the heart was kept alive for six hours. An interesting addition to the Maori collection at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, exhibited at a meeting of the Museum Council, was an object, probably a mauri or amulet, carved in pipe-clay. The article, which was presented by Mr G. E. Lopes, is circular, tho diameter being almost two inches and the height about an inch. It is decorated principally by primitive crisscross carving, but there are one or two rude representations of human features, one face being well-defined and having something of an Egyptian type of features. The accession is regarded by thb museum authorities as being of particular interest, the institution possessing no other Maori article of such a nature. It was found on a hilltop at- Tuirua, Ooromandel Peninsula, after other native articles were recovered following tho burning of an area of bush.
