| 4 j ELIMINATION OF NUISANCE. i Speaking to a representative of The j Pises* regarding complaints as to ! trolley-buses raising dust, Mr Frank I Thompson, General Manager of the j Tramways, stated that the Board was ! taking to minimise the causes of complaint. "The Hoard Dikes, the view." Mr i Thompson said, ''that a.s it has to pay :C'G3 a year for each of its trolley-buses i.u heavy traffic fees, it should no more bo called upon to lay dust on the road than any private bus proprietor. That is a responsibility on the road local authority. The dust trouble doos not appear in tho City streets, bufc develops when the water-bound macadam roads, such as Travers and Unwhill roads, aro reached. "Tho Hoard is putting down another floor covering in its trolley-buses with tho view of seeing if some improvement will result, and in the specifications for tho new trolley-buses special reftirenco is made to the omission of anv equipment which will cause trouble. Trolley-buses travelling at tho same speed raise no more dust than petrol buses. Improvement of Roads. "Tho heavy traffic license ice i* intended to provide for the extra wear and tear to which the road is subjected and the scale fixed by the Transport Department haR been determined with relation to tho weight of tho vehicle." Mr Thompson added that clause 11 of tho Board's proposed amendment Act would enable the Board to contribute a lump sum towards the reconstruction of any road along which it was proposed to run trolley-buses, provided that tho Board was relieved of annual heavy traffic fees to nn equal amount. Already this principle is recognised by section] 73 of the Public Works Ar-t". 1.928.
