TIMAEU. A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday was presided over by Mr P. Porter. Advice was received from the Timaru Harbour Board that it had been decided to discontinue, as from October Ist, the harbour improvement rate of 6d per ton. The Grounds Committee reported on various improvements that had been carried out. The chairman reported that a subcommittee had interviewed the General Manager of Railways (Mr P. G. Roussell) when he was in Timaru with the Railway Board, and discussed with him the rail rebate on frozen meat. Members urged that the rebate should be given to farmers outside the ten miles radius, but the General Manager said that the Eoard had laid down "a definite policy on the question, and. he could not offer much hope of extension outside the ten-mile limit. Mr B. E. H. Tripp seconded the motion, which was carried. The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board forwarded conditions of the district competition for export of lambs, 1932-33. The South Canterbury district would be between the Rangitata and the Waitaki rivers. A grant of £lO to the Canterbury Agricultural College for research work on ewe mortalities was approved. Messrs G. A. M. Macdonald, H. B. S. Johnstone, and W. H. Orbell were 'appointed a committee to bring down a report on land valuations in Canterbury. Bagby. The South Canterbury team to meet A ihburton in the final representative match this Beason, at Ashburton, today, is as follows: —h. Connolly; -E. Ryan, A. Gaffaney, T. Morrison; K. BJyth, C. Cartwright; G. Gaffaney; D. Callanan, B. Seaton, I. Caird, G. Kelly, L. Grant, F. Shewan, T. Gunn, W. Duke. The only changes have been made in the forwards, Kelly and Grant replacing Adkins and J. Callanan.

School Committee. The Timaru South School Committee met on Thursday evening, Mr W. J. Dickson presiding. The headmaster, Mr W. J. Mottrain, reported that since the school reopened on Monday the attendance had been much better than in the previous term. The roll was 475 and the average attendance for the week 452. On account of the decreased attendance last term, partly due to an epidemic of colds, no extra assistant had been appointed this term. Miss Mason and Miss Black completed their term at the school, and Mr Cadwallader had been reappointed for the third terjn, and Finnie had taken up duties for the term. The report was adopted. Community Singing. Another successful community sing, led by Mr Alan Shrimpton (conductor), assisted by Mi E. Sinclair (aecompan-. iat), was held in tlu Regent Theatre Jesterday. The collection totalled £3 i Id, and a eake which had been given was held up for auction, and realised j 6a, which brought the takings to £3 12s Jd. The cake was handed Over to tho Presbyterian Orphanage by the . purchaser. Last week the appeal for the orphan--120 wireless fund resulted in £ 9d being collected, and Mr H. Lister presented a battery set to the organiser (Mr C. G. Baker). Mr Baker anttouncd that in exchange for the £6 15s 9d and the battery set, Mr A. Agnew had installed an up-to-date electric set; and as the aerial poles were given by Miss D Boss the set had been secured very cheaply. * An appeal was made to. those present* and a further 30s was; collected to pay for the first radio license.

ST. ANDREWS. The. juonthly meeting of the St. Andrews branch of the Women's Institute was held in the hall. Mrs W. E. Mills, president, presided. A competition for the best scores was won by Mrs W. Cague, with Miss Lois Dellow second, and for the best scarf by Mrs W. Cague; A demonstration was giyen by Miss Begg, of Auckland, assisted -,by Miss Geddis. Tho demonstrators showed the construction of a dressmaker's model. Another demonstration on pulse-making van given by Miss Begg, of Titnaru. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs L. Coe. Mrs G. J. King, Mrs A. W. Dellow, and Miss Slattery. TEMUKA. In the semi-final of the Temuka men's golf championship R. H. Taylor beat C. L. Fraaer on Thursday afternoon by 4 up and 3 to play.' Taj'lor will meet W. Smart in the final. The men/s iteam to play Timaru Club on the Highfield links, on Thursday next is:—o. L. Frabct, Dr. F. A. Scannell, J. T. Smart, W. Smart, R. H.* Taylor, and W; Pearse. On Thursday afternoon the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan) and councillors, together with Mr H. Stevens, engineer in charge of the east side'drainage scheme, inspected a site near the domain fernery for the proposed west side septic tank.' Mr Stevens recommended that a site hearer the railway line would bp more suitable, and it was left to him to communicate with the Railway Department.

GERALDINE.

The premises occupied by M«esra Brehaut Bros., Talbot street, cycle and gramophone dealers, were broken into early yesterday morning. A young man who was. going home from a dance saw a torch Hashing inside the shop. On investigation it was found that the intruder had loft. Ihe front door had been forced open and a portable gramophone which had been taken from the counter was lying near the door. Both cash drawers had been pulled out and the contents were scattered about the floor. Nothing was missing. . . The monthly meeting or the Geraldine branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Parish Hall, the president (Mrs J. M. H. Tripp"> presiding. The nurse's report showed that during August in the Geraldine district 113 visits were received at the Plunket rooms and 150 were paid to homes. She motored 337 miles. There were four- new babies. In the' Fairlie district 67 visits were paid to the rooms and the nurse paid 70 visits to homes. She received 12 telephone calls and motored IGI miles. There were three new babies. In the Te Ngawai district 40 X'isits were nnid to the rooms, the nurse received eight telephone calls and motored 103 miles. There was one new ease. A representative women's match was | played at Fairlie on Thursday after- I noon between teams from the Macken- j zio Hogk.ey Sub-Association and the Geraldine County Sub-Association. The match resulted in a win for the local teo.m by 2 goals to' 0. The following team has been selected to represent the Geraldine District Golf Club in a match to be played atTimaru on Thursday next for the Bristol Cup: D. Macdonal:!, D. J. Lack, E F. Scott, C. J, Kerr, A. D. Sharpe, and H. C. Bennett. WOODBURY. Mr It. A. Dixon presided over a good attendance at the weekly meeting of the Men's Social and Debating Club. A club debate was held, the subject being,' "Should Party Politics be Abolished ?" 'On a vote being taken, the negative side was declared I the winner.

Mr Prebble, of Dunedin, is visiting Mr T. P. Wooding, "Groveley," Woodbury. Miss Irene Shaw, of Wanganui, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Shaw, Pleasant Valley.

FAIRLIE. The monthly meeting of the Fairlia District High School Committee was heir!, in the school. Present: Messrs C. J. Talbot (chairman), H. Carlton, A. R. Manchester, J. A. Fraser, W. Scott, and G. Lyons (secretary). The headmaster, Mr 0. D. Gilling, reported that the roll number at present was: Primary department 198, average attendance 183.5; secondary department 45, average attendance 42.5. The visitors for the month reported that the drain required attention. It was decided that representatives of the council and school committee inspect the drain. The secretary , was instructed to write to Mrs Gow expressing sympathy at the-death of'her. husband, Mr J. G. Gow 1 ; 4-cc®unts 'amounting to !• £l2 2s 6d were passed for payment.
