"K" TYPE LOCOMOTIVES.
'XO rnE EDITOR Of THE PRESS. >Sir,—l noticed with interest photographs, in Saturday's issue of The Pbbss, of the new class of locomotives for the New Zealand railways, now under construction at the llutt Workshops. Would it be possible to obtain particulars of the number of tubes, their diameter and thickness, and the nmnber-of stay tubes in the boiler? I also notice iu the diagram that the square tender eet-ms to have returned to favour, instead of the round tender seen on the A.B. class of* locomotive. Is this because of the larger capacity obtained with a square tender or because of the smaller cost of maintenance?— Yours, etc., IXTERfcSTED. August '.'9 th, J932. (The Locomotive Superintendent of the New Zealand Government Railways states that the number of boiler tubes is 324, each -in outside diafrieter, 12 W.G. thick. Number of superheater flues is 24, each siin outside diameter, 8 W.G. thick. No stay tubes aro fitted. The square form of tender was fitted solely because it provides for larger capacity than the circular form of tendor. It is considered that, apart from this one feature, the cylindrical tender is as satisfactory as the square type.]
