The mascot of the sloop Veronica, a cat named Paekakariki, or "Paekak" for short, disappeared while the vessel was making a stay of ten days at Funafuti, on her Islands cruise (say ß the "New Zealand Herald")- AM e ®orts to trace the ca-t before the sloop left were unsuccessful. The Veronica returned to Auckland on Tuesday. Ihe mascot has had a chequered career, and during his two years' stay on board has several times missed the ship. At Timaru he was left behind, but when the Veronica reached Dunedin <he came on board again in a basket, having been sent back to the sloop by someone who had recognised him in Tiinaru. .bast year on the Islands cruise he went ashore on a small island, but only stayed one night, and was brought back on board.
