NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The fifth annual meeting of the Bangiora Celtic Tennis Club was held on Wednesday evening, Mr D. P. Jenkins presiding. The secretary's report stated that the club had had a successful season. The annual report and bal-ance-sheet, read by the secretary, were adopted. The following officers were elected: —President, Mr D. P. Jenkins (re-elected); vice-president, Mr T. McBrearty; secretary, Miss M. Meyer; club captain, Mr E. Fahey: women's captain, Miss E. Brady; delegates to the North Canterbury Tennis Association, Messrs D. P. Jenkins and T. Moran; committee, Misses N. Lynskey and E. Brady, Messrs J. Fahey and L. Moran. The opening day was. fixed for October Bth, and it was decided to hold a dance on that evening. KAIAPOI. A meeting was held in the Borough Council chambers, Kaiapoi, to reorganise the Red Cross branch. Mr G. J. Ronaldson (Christchurch) presided, and with Sister Christian explained the work being carried out by the society. It was decided to form a sub-centre, and all present indicated their willingness to become members. Officers elected were: —President, the Mayor, the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery; treasurer, Mr Vickery; secretary, Mrs ti. 11. Aspinall. The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Tennis Club was held in the Cycle Club rooms, Kaiapoi. The president. Mr A. Hirst presided. The annual report stated that the club's four courts in Darnley square had been topdressed, and all the club's property was in first-class condition. During the past season the club's teams had acquitted themselves meritoriously in the North Canterbury Association's oompetions. The report and balance-sheet, the latter showing a credit balance of £lO 7s sd, were received and adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, Mr 11. W. It was decided that junior members not taking part in matches be not permitted to play on the courts on Saturday afternoons between 2 and 5 o'clock. A motion to enter a team in the Canterbury Association suburban competition was lost, and it was decided to continue in the North Canterbury SubAssociation's competitions and to enter a senior and junior team.

HANMER SPRINGS. The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Sub-Centre was held in the Ited Cross rooms, Mr J. Ash ton presiding. The secretary's report r and the treasurer's balance-sheet were adopted. It was decided to cease operations until the Christchurch brancb notified the sub-centre of further need. Three trustees were appointed: Mrs H. Glan and Messrs W. R. Hughes and J. Ashton. It was decided to open an account in the Post Office bank and that the balance of funds in hand be deposited there, 1 :

CHEVIOT. Members, visitors, and friends of the Cheviot branch of the- Women's -Institute met . in tlie .Cheviot. Public Hall to celebrate the first birthday of the institute.. The programme commenced with community singing, under the leadership of Mr G. Strutliers. During the evoning items were contributed by the following: Mrs A. Murray (song), Mrs R. Bailey and Mr C. Ogden (piano and violin duet), Miss Brewin (recitation), Mrs H. Tetter (song), and Miss E. Penhalluriack (recitation). The members of the Omihi Institute staged a one-act play entitled, "Aunt Millicent's Way." The president, Mrs G. Struthers,. presented the prizes for the most points in the competitions held during the year, which were won as follows: Mrs R. G. Archer 1, Misses E. Savage and O. Hughes, equal, 2. Mesdames C. Wilkinson and D. O'Connor cut the birthday cake, which was the gift of Mrs G. Struthers. Mrs R. G. Archer decorated it. Misses Nancy Renner and Patsy Archer presented the president, Mrs G. Struthers, with a beautiful bouquet of spring flowers, and also presented Victorian posies to Miss 0. Hughes, the first secretary of the institute, and to Mrs A. Elliott, the present secretary.

WAIPARA. A soeial evening organised by the Tennis Club was held in the hall. Competitions were won by Mrs Forsyth, Miss Sheasby, Messrs C. Laredo and F. Laredo. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs Ferguson, Misses J. Ferguson, M. Whvte, ancf Mr Watkins. OXFORD. The fourth annual social of the Oxford Working Men's Club was held in the Town Hall. The president, Mr P. Garlick, welcomed the visitors, expressing his pleasure at being abl<s again to greet the members of the orchestra from the Christchurch Club. A fine programme was presented by the orchestra of 22 players, under the baton of Mr Heath. Supporting the programme were "songs by Miss Loader, and by Messrs Harris and Smith, while humorous items were given by Messrs It. Stevens, F. Moran, and J. Laurenson. The piccolo solos of Mr Amos were much enjoyed. The music for the dance was supplied by Knowles' Band, and the duties of M.C. were carried out jointly by Messrs L. B. Debenham and W. J. Roberts. The winners of the lucky spot waltz were Miss B. Lange and Mr Hewson, while Miss J. Baxter and Mr N. Stevenson won the lucky spot one-step. An evangelistic mission was conducted in Oxford from August 21st to September 4th by Mr A. Johnston, of the New Zealand Bible Training Institute, at the invitation of the Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian Churches, and the Salvation Army. The co-operating churches closed down their services on the second and third Sunday evenings of the mission, when united gatherings were held in the Town Hall. Mr Johnston, who lost his sight in the Great War, spoke specially to men on the first Friday evening. A rally of Sunday Sohool scholars was held on the second Sunday. The second Tuesday, was young peoples night. Mr Johnston, also conducted $ service for the men at the relief camps *t Glentui on the third Sunday afternoon..

SEFTON. The Sefton Cricket Clulb held its annual meeting in the Domain Pavilion Mr F. H. Ford presiding. The election of officers reunited:—Patron, the Bt. Hon. G. W. Forbes; president, Mr A. Johnstone; vice-presidents, Messrs G. and A. James, H. A. Ashworth, 1. Champion, B. Johnstone, R. Dobson, C. J. Boseveare, H. Jamieson, sen., J. Criglington, sen., J. Fitzpatrick, and W. Hales; club captain, Mr Les Hales; secretary and treasurer, Mr C. D. Pptrie. The Workers' Educational Association group met this week, when the members read the play "Socrates," by Clifford Bax. The monthly fellowship meeting of the Woodend-Sefton Methodist Circuit was held in the Methodist Schoolroom. The Rev. F. H. Ford presided, and Mr T. J. Burnet, of Woodend, gave an address. Supper was provided by the women of the congregation. FERNSIDE. At the annual meeting of the Fernside Tennis Club the following officers were elected: —Patron, the Bt. Hon. G. W. Forbes; president, Mr S. C. Hewitt; vice-presidents, Messrs H. E. Evans, A. M. Carpenter, W. Smith, J. Broshnan, W. V. Guy, W. J. Morris, and T. Mcintosh; club captain, Mr B. Ellen; secretary, Mr J. A. Mackenzie; committee, Mrs T. Mcintosh, Miss R. Smith, Messrs R. Sutherland, L Morris, and W. Smith; auditor, Mr W. V. Guy; delegates, Messrs S. C. Hewitt and R. Ellen. It was decided to open the season on September 17th, and to hold I a flannel dance in the evening. SPRINGSTON. A dance arranged by the Sunshine Club'a baskotball teams was held in the Public Hall. There was a large attendance, many visitors from neighbouring clubs being present. The hall was decorated with green and gold streamers and spring flowers. Music was supplied by the Imperial Jafcz Band, extras being played by Mcsdtimeß W. Greenslade and P. lliordan. Mr Bissett was M.C. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss S. Miller and Mr J. Wright, and a Monte Carlo one-step by Miss M. Everest and Mr W. Thomas. A cake competition was won by Miss H. Chapman. LINCOLN. At a meeting of the Domain Board there were present: Messrs Hopley (chairman), C. Mills, B. Moran, H. Moir, and R. Hamilton (secretary). The chairman reported that all fences were now in good order, and cleaning up was being done. Two swans had been procured and others were being supplied by the Acclimatisation Society. Pin as radiata trees had been planted and various shrubs. The secretary, owing to his leaving the district, tendered his resignation. Mr J. Henry was nominated to fill the vacancy. The annual general meeting of the Lincoln Tennis Club was held m the Technical School, 24 being present, lho report stated that there were 45 members. SOUTHBRIDGE. At the annual meeting of the Southbridge Bowling and Croquet Club, over"which Mr D. W. Hayes presided, sympathy was extended to the relatives of Mr G. H. Hampton, who liad been an enthusiastic bowler. The annual report recorded a satisiactory year, several members having figured prominently in the centre's competitions. Thanks were conveyed to members who had helped to keep the green in order daring tho latter part of the Benson, when was no caretaker. Tho balance-sheet disclosed a credit of £2O IDs 3d. Officers elected were: Patron*, Sir Heaton Rhodes, and Messrs D. Jonos and J. Connolly, M.P.; president, Mr D. W. Hayes; vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. Connell and T. El. Dennett; hon. and treasurer, Mr A. Tons; committee, Messrs R. J. Parkiu, J. Hannah, A. Balneaves, S. Gilray, J. Carter, T. Griffin, J. T. Carr, and E. A. Inwood; green superintendent, Mr T. H. Bennett ; delegate to the Christchurch Centre, Mr C. H. Piper; delegates to tho Ellesmere Association, the president and Messrs Bennett and Parkin. The subscription was fixed at 30s, with a reduction of 10s for junior members joining after Christmas. Messrs Connell, Parkin, and Hannah were appointed a sub-committee to prepare rules, with a view to expediting elub competitions. Messrs Hayes, Connell, and Parkin were appointed a selection and handicapping committee. The president and Mr Bennett were asked to go into the question of improving the water tjupply. RUSSELL'S FLAT. At the fortnightly social and dance , prizes were won by Miss Wilson, Miss Governess, Mr G. Williams, and Mr D. Italic. Music for the danco waft supplied by Mr Hurnni, and Mr Burrowes was M.C. Miss Jarden, who has been the guest of Mrs Irvine, "Wyndale," has returned to Christchurch. LEESTON. Eight candidates were nominated yesterday for seats on the Leeston Town Board, and it will be necessary to take a poll on September 21st for the return of seven. The candidates are: — Messrs W. B. Brav; F. B/ Clausen, J. H. Jones, W. Johnston, A. S. Lyons, R. J. McConnell, F. K. Taylor, and L. C. Vieary. Three members of the old Board, Dr. W. A. Johnston, and Messrs J. C. Free and F. Rowell, are not seeking re-election. TEMPLETOiN. The annual meeting of the Templeton Cricket Club was presided over by Mr D. Mackie. The election of officers resulted: —Patron, Mr R. Day; president, Mr 0. W. Collings; vice-presidents, Messrs D. Mackie, \V. C. Smith, G. W. Bailey, J. Watt, and J. Doeherty; lion, secretary, Mr R. Mackie; hon. treasurer, Mr D. BURWOOD. An Invitation was given to householders to meet the School Committee and to comment or make suggestions in the interests of the scholars. There was a moderate attendance and several suggestions were made which tho committee will duly consider. The ordinary meeting of the committee was held after the close of the householders' meeting when accounts to the amount of £4 9s Id were passed for payment. No. 1 account showed a net balance of £29 Gs 3d and No. 2 account £2O 2s. The headmaster reported tho term roll at 111.8 and a weekly average attendance of 93.3. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mr Gray and family in their bereavement. A deputation was appointed to support the School Committees' Association relating to the contract for school books. The Burwood Miniature Rifle Club held a meeting during the Wb?k. the following being present:—Messrs itowse, Gapes, Mulholland, D. Haffenden, MeKecknie, Parka, and Peters. An invitation from _the Pctone Rifle Club to join in their competition. and also from tho North Islaud Rifle Club was declined with regret. Final arrangements were made for the club's annual smoke concert/ at which the presentation of trophies will bo made, Ihe date being fixed for September 15th. It was also decided to hold the club's annual ball On September 29th. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs J. Gray and Mr Mulholland in their bereavements.

LADBROOIvS. At the Hall Committee's weekly social the winners of competitions, were Miss Betty McLaughlin, Mrs.Pickering, Mr Woods, and Mr A. McLaughlin. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr G. McCarthy (piano) and Mr F. Eoeslar (violin).
