The almost negligible dimensions to which third-class travel from Europe to the United States has shrunk is shown by the quota returns for the year ended with June 30th. The total number of immigrants allowed under the regulations was 153,831, but the actual number of granted under the quota was only 11,512, or 142,289 below the total allowed by the immigration authorities. The United Kingdom quota was 05,721, but only 1979 visas were granted. For the Irish Free State the numbers were 17,853 and 381: Germany, 25,957 and 1274; Ttaly, 5802" and 1864; Poland, 6524 and 840; Sweden, 3314 and 201; and Norway, 2377 and 217. At present there is no sign of any improvement in the volume of westbound third-class travel to the United States. REX NEARING COMPLETION. The Italian liner Ilex, which the AnsaldoShipbuilding Company is building to the order of the Italia Company, is rapidly approaching completion. She is of about 50,000 tons gros3 and is similar in many respects to the C'onte tit Savoia, tmildin" foithe same owners at Trieste. The Rex, which measures 830 feet in length b.p. by 98 feet beam and 53 feet depth, was launched twelve months ago, and in designed for a speed of 27 knots, which will enablo her to make tlxi passage between Genoa and New York in Hcvon days. Karly in July she was placed in the of the graving-docks at Genoa operated by the S.A. Ente Bacini for the lilting of her four propellers and rudder, and she is expected to undergo her preliminary trials very shortly. The dock in which she is accommodated was specially enlarged last year so that she and the Conte di Savoia could be overhauled at their home port, and it is worthy of note that the Ente Bacini has lately reorganised ifs docking facilities on a highly efficient basis. Not very long ago it handled the 24,281-ton liuer Duilio between 8.30 a.m. and 8 p.m. In those 115 hours, although the vessel was loaded to a draught of 28ft 6in, she was docked, her bottom was cleaned and painted, and she was undocked ready for service again. On another occasion tlio \Voermann liner Übena, 9554 tons gross, was docked for urgent repairs when in a fully loaded condition.
