SMITH STREET, HEATHCOTE.

TO* THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—l notice in the columns of The Phess that a meeting has been held to consider the duplication of street and road names in and around the City of Christchurch; and among them is Smith street, Heathcote. Over

twenty years ago the postal authorities made a similar move to do away with possible confusion, and a communication was received by what was then the Heathcote Eoad Board, of which I was a member representing the Heathcote riding. In discussing the question of Smith street, the members found a difficulty in finding a name that would not be likely to be adopted in any other of the surrounding districts; so I sugyjstcd Rollin street, and so. it was named. Smith and Anthony were at the time revising their map of Curistchureh and suburbs, and they inserted Rollin street, and not Smith street. A copy of this I have in my study. Some time ago I called the county clerk's attention to this matter; but nothing was done. The necessary data are to be found in the office, so one wonders why the mistake has existed so long. This will simplify matters for the Heathcote County Council.—Yours, etc., September 7th, 1932.
