SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. 1 Mrs Redmond Neill ("Barossa") has been staying in Timaru. Mrs C. T. Ballantyne (Craigie street) has left for Christchurch. I Miss Amy Oliver ("Surrey Downs," I Pleasant Point) has returned from Christchurch. Dr. and Mrs W. H. Hargreaves (Kakahu) are spending a few days in Christchurch. Mrs W. A. Moore ("Venard," Waiiti road) has returned from a visit to Sir Joseph and Lady Kinsey (Christchurch). Miss Vivien Raymond (Christchurcli) is spending a few days with her parents, Mr and Mrs W. Raymond (Nile street). Mrs M. Hall (Hastings) and Mrs W. Goodman (Temuka) are the guests of their mother, Mrs Nesbitt (Bank street. Timaru) for the Waimataitai School Jubilee celebrations. Mr and Mrs R. A. Malcolm (Christchurch) arrived in Timaru yesterday to participate in the functions in connexion with the Waimataitai School Jubilee. VICTORY MEMORIAL SCHOOL.
Pupils of St. Matthew's Victory Memorial School, Springfield road, lield their annual middle-term fancy dress party in St. Matthew's Parish Hall. There a large attendance of members and friends. The many fancy costumes made a colourful picture in a setting of autumn browns, with black and rod, the school colours, as a decoration scheme. A maypolo dance by the tiny tots was a very popular item, as was also their "eurhythmies." The school staff, under Mrs F. C. L. Bowles (head mistress), assisted by Messrs C. H. Clibborn, H. A. Jarden, and E. Wilson, of the School Committee, supervised a programme of dances, folk dances, playlets, songs, and games. Musical items were given by Mr Hamilton Dickson. The supper arrangements were in. charge of Mesdames C. M. Johnston, E. Wilson, and W. Pester. At tho conclusion of the entertainment the Rev. J. F. Feron' (vicar) congratulated the staff and pupils on the success of the party and the work of the school during the past two terms, and conveyed to the staff the thanks and appreciation of the parents. He welcomed tho old pupils who were present. WEDDINGS. FTSHER—HOLLIDAY. The marriage was celebrated recently at St. Stephen's Church, Shirley, of Gladys Holliday, only daughter of Mr and Mrs \V. J. Holliday,. Chancellor street, Shirley, to Francis Gordon, elder son of Mrs Fisher, of Kaiapoi, and tho late Mr 'l'. i*'. iJislier. The itev. J. K. ilervey performed the ceremony. The bride, who was escorted by her father, wore a frock of midnight blue celanese marocain inset with a pointed yoke of parchment tinted lace. Her coatee to match had long-fitting sleeves edged with pleated frill, and her summer felt hat of the same shade, with side bandeau and upturned brim, was trimmed with plaited felt to tone. She carried a bouquet of freesias, arbutilons, and maidenhair fern, and a horseshoe of orange blossom. The attendants were Miss Joan Luxton and Miss Heather Fisher (sister of the bridegroom). They wore frocks of delphinium blue and primrose celanese marocain, respectively, made with sleeveless bodices, with rucked panels. The skirts, cut on diagonal fines, were fully-flared, and of anklelength. Their coatees had elbow-length sleeves banded with fur and their hats of summer felt were trimmed with bows of velvet ribbon. They carried bouquets of lemon, and golden arbutilons and poppies and maidenhair fern. Mr Raymond Fisher attended his brother as best man, and Mr Noel Burtt was groomsman. As she left the church, the bride was presented with a silver horseshoe by little Audrey Best. A reception was held later in St. Stephen's Church Hall, where Mrs Holliday received the guests wearing a smart black and white ensemble and a black straw hat relieved with white. Her bouquet was composed of red anemones and fern. Mrs Fisher wore a tailored black suit costume, and a liat of black felt and celophane straw. She carried a bouquet of flowers in autumn shades. Songs were sung by Mrs Iv. Andrews and Mr Noel Burtt. and banjo selections were given by Miss Muriel Hudson. When Mr and Mrs Gordon Fisher left on a motor tour of the South Island, the latter was wearing a brown flecked tweed suit, a browh diagonal velour coat, and a brown felt hat btinded with tangerine and fawn ribbon.
TYSON—GOSNEY. The wedding was celebrated recently in St. John's Church. Latimer square, of Tlielma Annie Eileen, eldest daughter of Mr and Mi's G. A. Gosney, Christchurch, to William, eldest son of Mr and Mrs H. Tyson, of Belfast. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. T. J. McWilliam. The bride,' who was given away by her father, wore a frock of French ivory satin, made with tight-fitting bodice and sleeves, and long, flared skirt. She carried a shower bouquet of hothouse flowers. Miss Evelyn Gosney (sister of the bride) and Miss Sylvia Tyson (sister of the bridegroom) acted as bridesmaids. They wore frocks of blue and peach silk tulle respectively* made- on
Victorian lines, and finished with tiny frills. Their bonnets were of matching shade, and they carried bouquets of flowers to tone. Junnie Olsen, as flower girl, wore a frock similar to the bridesmaids, and she carried a basket of flowers to tone. Edwin Holland, of Clarkville, was best man, and Mr Kenneth Gosney (brother of the bride) was groomsman. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the Forester's Hall, where the bride's mother received the guests wearing a frock of navy bine satin, relieved with peach georgette, and a hat to match. Her bouquet was of violets and maidenhair fern. The bridegroom's mother _ wore a frock of black and white silk crepe with a hat to match. She carried a bouquet of hothouse flowers. For travelling the bride wore a green and white frock with a coat and hat to match.
FANCY DRESS PARTY.
FUNCTION AT PAPANUI. The assist Nurse Maude in her work, a most successful children's fancy dress party was held last evening in the l'apanui Memorial Hall. There was a large gathering of children and parents. The judges of the fancy dresses were Mesdames E. Boulton, Ballin, and Wilkes. They were set a difficult task in separating the winners, who were as follows: Lenore Hawker (Nigger), Esme Soper (Indian), David Witte (Owl), Desmond Davies (Sugar Lump), Olive Warren (Newspaper), Wallace Newman (Baker), Mary McCausland (Elephant), Leslie "Calvert (Teddy Bear), Douglas Calvert (Organgrinder), Nola Worsdell (Pierrette), Allan Kettle (Christy Minstrel), Jack Lange (Father Christmas). During the evening the children amused themselves with games and community singing. Dances were given by Shirley Hewson, Shirley Clark, Vonuie Whall, Audrey Dickenson, and Pauline Stafford. Miss llita Smallbon sang "Won't You Buy My Pretty Flowers ?" and received a good response to her appeal. The community singing was led by Mr Bernard Rennell, and Miss A. Peters played the accompaniments. The organiser was Mrs H. It. Smith.
