TIMARU.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A sitting of the Timaru Magistrate's Court was held yesterclay before Mi- C. K. On- Walker, S.M. Frederick Williamson was charged with driving- a motor-car oil the Tiaiaru-Fairlie main road at Pleasant Point at a dangerous speed. Defendant was fined £2 and costs. Richard Daly, of Pleasant Point, was charged with knowingly permitting Thomas Manchester to use an unregistered motor-lorry. He was fined £l, costs ,1.25. Interesting Stamps. llr i-i. IS. Paterson, Wai-iti road, Timaru, received a most interesting addition to his stamp collection yesterday from a friend at the McGill University, Montreal, Canada. The stamps are a sot issued by the Canadian Government in commemoration of the Ottawa Conference. A new feature is a portrait of the -Prince of Wales on the blue 5 cent, stavip. The King is featured on the 3 cent, red stamp. Other stamps are a 5 cent oli\'e-brown Canadian Air Mail over-printed "6 cents Ottawa Conference, ,1£).>2," and al3 cent green depicting Britannia seated on a daiß between the eastern and western hemispheres. With the exception of the 3 cent red, the stamps are well produced and are interesting philatelic specimens. Unemployment. Mr Clyde Carr, M.P., has sent the following telegram to the Acting-Minister for Employment (the Hon. Adam Hamilton): —"Position here very critical; many cases of severe privation. Hospital Board able to help only cases of actual sii-kue.sg. Private charity alone supplements utterly inadequate relief wages. Absolutely necessary to extend to Timaru rationing scheme operating in main centres." Prevention of Cruelty. At a meeting of the South Canterbury branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the inspector (Mr G. Gliddon) reported having visited a, farm at Beautiful Valley, where he had found a number of cattle dead and dying of starvation. No one was resident on the place, and on subsequent visits lie had found other cattle dead and in such a weakened condition as to render their destruction imperative. After f-ome discussion the Society decided to prosecute the owners. Drama League. At the concluding session of the South Canterbury Drama League's community festival held before a full house last ovening the following plays were presented:— "The, Prodigal Son," by P. 0. Honmctt, Timaru Workers' Educational Association. "Waterloo," by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Geraldine Players A. "The Road of Poplars," by Vernon XyJvaine, Pleasant Point Workers'. Educational Association. Mr W. S. Wauchop gave further useful criticisms, and announced the various prizG-winners. Tlie results were-Pleasant Point Workers' Educational Association, "Road of Poplars." 1, South Canterbury Women's C'lub, "Tbe ffomefront.'' 2. The rup for the best individual performance was awarded lo the second team.

* FAIRLIE. Tlio monthly meeting of I he Mackenzie sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association was held at Albury, the president, Mr W. Fra6er, presiding. A scheme for assistance from the Poppy Day fund was discussed and a form of relief adopted. A graut of £35 was received from the Mackenzie County Council, and £l2 from the Memorial Committee. Fiticld 72, and C. Shaw 71. At the weekly meeting of tlie Men's Social and -Debating Club, Canon J. F. Courscy presided. A debate on "Should Capital Punishment bo Abolished,'-' was held. Messrs Stonyer and Wooding led the side lor abolition, and Messrs Flatman and Godfrey opposed them. At the conclusion of tho debate, the majority agreed that capital punishment should be abolished. FOUR PEAKS. Ai- the weekly practice of the Four Peaks Men's Miniature Rifle Club, the following were the best scores:—J. Fifield 76, J. Robinson 76, R. D. AValdie 75, C. Burrows 74. .Robin Robinson 70, R. G. "Waidie 68, and L. Orr 65. A trophy, presented by Mr R. Robinson, was won by J. Robinson with 75 oil the rifle. GERALDINE. Whiie practising football on Wednesday evening, M. Hayes, of Cos street, broke his arm. A meeting ol the Geraldine District High .School Jubilee Committee was held in the Masonic Refectory, the chairman (Mr A. M. fyle) presiding. Accounts amounting to £- 10s Ucl were passed for payment. The convener of tho Sports Committee (Mr L. -J. Bennington) reported that it was proposed to hold a procession of decorated vehicles and a sports meeting in the Domain. Rugby and basketball matches were played between the Orari and the Geraldine Schools on Wednesday aftcinoon. The football match resulted in a win for the home team by l'J points to 5. Blaeknioro reported that the Canterbury Progress League had derided to circularise local bodies regarding an effort to have telephone rentals and bureau charges reduced. A preliminary teporl had been received from a .sub-committee' on the unification of educational control. The proposals put forward favoured provincial Boards controlling all types of education. On the motion ot Mr liny it was decided to write to the Hoard's representative on the Standing Committee disapproving of the proposal to introduce provincial .secondary control.
