SUBSTANTIAL PENALTIES TO BE IMPOSED. ASSOCUTIOK IELSGKAJt ) WELLINGTON, August 10. A bar of gold valued at £175, seized when two passengers were about to leave for Sydney by the Zealandia ou August sth, will probably be returned to its owners in the near future, but the Customs Department with the concurrence of the Acting-Minister - for Customs, has imposed a fined of £6O. Had the export duty been paid on the gold instead of an attempt being made to smuggle it out of the country, the owners would have had only £4 to pay. The penalty for attempting to evade the payment of duty is the confiscation of the gold* or a fine up to £SOO at the discretiou of the Minister for Customs. It •is stated officially that in the event of future attempts to export gold illegally being discovered, very subsantial penalties will be imposed.
