MACARTHY TRUST.

DISTRIBUTION OF £12,500.

TOTAL ALLOCATIONS £179,527.

(i-RESo ASSOCIATION T£LEGKAM.)

WELLINGTON, August 15,

The annual meeting of tho Board of Governors of the T, G. Maearthy Trust was held at Parliament Buildings today. There were present his Excellencv the Govcrnor-Geueral (Lord Bledisloo), the Prime Minister (the lit. Hon. G. W. Forbes), his Grace Archbishop Kedwood, liia Worship the Mayor (Mr T. 0. A. Hislop), and the Public Trustee (Mr J. W. Macdonald), chairman of the Advisory Committee to the Board of Governors.

The Trust was created by the will of Mr T. G. Maearthy for charitable and educational purposes iu the provincial district of Wellington. Since the benefactor's death in 191'2 £irs),o'J7 has been distributed amongst the objects of his bounty, and this year £12,500 is available for division.

In making reference to the exceptional dilliculties and anxieties which are being experienced in regard to commercial, linancial, and business interests, the Public Trustee said: <'l regret that the general economic depression has continued to affect, often with dramatic intensity, the circumstances of nearly every individual in tho community, with a result that the difficulties and responsibilities surrounding the administration of a trust holdiug such largo interests as docs the T. G. Macarthy Trust have largely increased." The spread of unemployment, loss ot' earning power, and additional taxation had made it extremely hard to maintain the revenue of the estate. Notwithstanding all this, however, he was pleased that as a result of the year's operations ho was able to provide £12,500 for the Board of Governors. At the same time, however, ho felt bound to mention that with the continuance of the prevailing depression it might well bo anticipated that difliculty would be encountered iu obtaining payment of interest and rents in the ensuing year. Moreover, it had to be remembered that by terms of the National Expenditure Adjustment. Act, 10."2, all rent and interest from April Ist, was eompulsorily reduced. This reduction would obviously bo reflected in next year's accounts? nud there were therefore good grounds for forecasting a further reduction in the amount available for distribution on the next occasion.
