LOSS OF STOCK.
SNOW IN THE WAIRARAPA. (PRISS ASSOCIATION TBLEQKAM.; CARTERTON, August 1"). Th«. recent snow-storm which visited (lie Wairarapa lias proved, particularly in the Maungarakei district, very disastrous. So heavy was the fall that divid-. ing fences between several properties yero all covered. Sheep and cattle, in their wanderings to find feed, became badly boxed in the gullies, where thore wcro snow-drifts fifteen to twenty feet deep. The heavy frost which followed t,ho fall froze * the surface and~ made steep glissade?, down which the sheep and cattle slid. Large numbers of sheep were affect oil with snow-blindness, and in their aimloss rumblings many were drowned in the creels, which temporarily formed lagoons In the gullies. over a week snow covered nil feed, and both sheep and cattle wore starving to death. The weight of the snow broke huge limbs oft fopest trees, and this green stuff was avidly devoured, even to bark. . T?ho position is now improving, though further back on thfc hills there are still deep drifts and the losses of stock are considerable.
