GARDENING SCHEME

A meeting to set up s committee to further the gardening Bcheme in. the district was held on Wednesday evening, Mr L. B. Hart presiding. The chairman outlined the scheme, stating that the committee would endeavour to get suitable land in "Papanui for relief workers ho that those -without aroas at their homes could grow vegetables for their own use. It was not intended that the vegetables so grown should be sold, Seed potatoes and other seeds would be provided. The following committee was set up: Messrs L. B. Hart (chairman), C. T. Head (secretary), YV. .7. Boyce, «T. K. Sinclair, E. Egglcstone.' and H. Tillmau. Tt was decided to look for suitable areas and to report to the next meeting. Beautifying Work. During tho week several plots have i been dug at the railway reserve and planted as a rose The roses were the gift of Mr C. H. Poulscn, Styx Nurseries. A dozen climbing roses have also, been planted at tho rustic fence alongside Ibe railway on Belvue avenue. Temperance Union. The monthly meeting of the Papanui branch of the "Women's Christian Temperance Union was held, on Thursday afternoon at the .Presbyterian Sunday Schoolroom. Mrs Graham presided. An invitation, was received for members to take'part in the procession to be held 1 in September in connexion with the centenary celebrations. The secretary was asked to send a letter of sympathy to Mrs Prampton in her illness. Miss Beckett, gave a demonstration on arts and crafts, and some fine poker workwas exhibited. Miss Beckett wc? thaukeo by Mesdames. Graham and KruseMethodist Church. A parly from the Methodist Church visited the relief camp at. Coutts Island last Sunday. Tbe Rev. A. Hopper conducted a service in tho large diningroom, the singing- toing led by- Mr Blakcley and Mies Cosgrove. Miss Benton played the piano, aud Mr. S. K-ob-inson the violin. At the conclusion the men thanked tho visitor and provided afternoon tea..

Northcotc Association. ■The weekly card evening organised by the Advance Northcote Association wan well attended. The winners were Mrs J. Gains and Mr S. Munro. The winners of the aggregate for the -&lv • " weeks were Mrs Xcvillo and Mr. ~L-j Grimwood.

Metaodiat Ladies' Guild. . j 'J'be Papanui Methodist Ladies' Guild held their monthly meeting on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a. good attendance. The meeting took the form of a hostess afternoon to raise money for the church trust funds. The hostesses were Mesdames Hopper, Carr, Hayuca, Gibson, Gran, Warren, llaynes, and Tillman. An enjoyable programme had been arranged, consisting of musical items by members of the guild, followed by a competition. Songs were given by Mesdames Thompson and Queree, and Miss Twose. Mrs Salkcld played the accompaniments, Fancy Dress Social. A fancy drcas social was held in the Papanui buildings on Tuesday evening.' The winners of the best costumes were; Mrs Dodgson ( Dolly VaTdcn) 1, Miss B. Bailey (Harem Lady) 2; Mr Tsric Evan (Chinese). 1, Mr, L. Wallace ' (Clergyman) 2/' The. judges were Mesdames "C. Burrows and J. "Sturroek. During the evening selections /wore given by the Wailana orchestra, national dances "by Masters Melville and Ray» mond Sturroek,', tap dances by Mr R. Deidrjch, songs by Messrs T. Puddle, T. Mayne, and P. Wallace. A luckyspot one-stop was-won by Miss Ei Jones and Mr J. Penrce. Music for the dancing was provided by Messrs K. Deidrich, T. Mayne, and P. Wallace, and Mrs J. Sturroek, Mr R. D6idrich was M.C.-

. Concert. A conccrtMn aid of St. Giles' Presbyterian church was held in tb« Memorial Hall. Several selections weri played by the Moonshine Orchestra, and the following contributed itetaßi—Mr Campbell (songs), Mies Blta Smallbon (recitations), Messrs Campbell and Hall (duet), Mr Wing (magician), Mrs B6oh (songs). The Bocdnd part of the programme was provided by members of Toe H. : "Bu6y Bees." , At tho weekly mooting'of the' <t ßll6y' Beos" a further parcel of clothing .was forwarded on to .Nurse Maude. Mrs If. R. Smith reported that 16 girlp and two boys had boon assisting for the past throe weeks, and had so, far knitted 40 squares to make Up for bod rugs. The committee would be grateful for any new or old -wool'to make further rug^. Arrangements were completed for the children's fancy dress party to be held next week, and Mesdamcs lu. Boultort and Balllri wore appointed judges. It was decided to give ten prizes. Amateur Cycling Club. ! Mr .F. Powell presided at a meeting of the Amateur Cycling Club. Others present were: Messrs R. Hill, W. Marks, A. Lancaster, T. A. Grotse, A. Hands, ~fi. E. Pearl, and J. Sturrock. The Kaiapoi Borough Council wrote granting permission to run races through the borough, provided the rules of the road were strictly adhered to. A letter from the New Zealaud Cycling Federation stated that it had been advised that the club had cancolled its affiliation with the New Zealand Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association, and that it was now conducting road races as an unregistered club. The federation asked what the intention* of the club were, so that it might decide what action it would. take in the matter. After-a discussion, it was decided to hold the matter in abeyance until the federation had a meeting and replied to the club's correspondence. It was decided to approach the Pioneer Sports Club to put on a gymkhana at the Show Grounds on the day of the Round-tho-Gorgcs race. Mr P. E. Pearl was appointed assistant secretary.
