THE EIGHTH PURSE FILLED.
ST. GEORGE'S HOSPITAL CHAPLAINCY FUND. Mrs Kilgour Thomson's gift of £2O was followed yesterday by the filling of a purse by Mrs William Ballantyne. Mrs Ballantyne's purse is that of a great merchant prince and banker, Sir Francis Baring, and is the eighth purse that has been filled. Sir Francis Baring, who had » world-wide reputation as a business man, played an important part :n the successful launching of- the Canterbury scheme. He Was a member of the committee of management, and gave valuable advice about shipping, having had much to do with the business connected with the dispatch of the First Four Ships. He was very much interested in the proposed college, and was particularly keen for a "university to be founded in the new settlement. He wanted the "college named the "Bujler College" after an eminent statesman, who before bis death m 1849, had been keenly interested "» colonial affairs.
