FOR THE ORPHANS.
COLLECTION IN WORTHY
CAUSE.
TO-DAY'S STREET APPEAL.
The orphan has a particular claim upon the benevobnee of the community, and in spite of the present difficult times it can confidently be predicted that few will be able to resist the appeal to be made in the streets to-day on behalf of tho combined Anglican, Presbyterian, and Methodist orphanages. If £ISOO, the objective of the day's appeal, is reached, as it can be if all give something, the anxiety concerning finance of those who control the City's orphanages should be removed.
Interest in the appeal has been maintained since it had to be postponed last week, and the body of 700 collectors then arranged for, will take up their posts with undiminished enthusiasm. The various organisations connected with the appeal have in the meantime collected £4OO bv their efforts. The amount received from people who held entertainments in their homes on the night of the special "radio evening'' is now over £3OO, and further sums are still coming in, while of the £45 asked by one listener who offered to give £5 if nine others would do tho same, £4O has been received. Bible classes have contributed £7O towards the "bread bill" fund. A special ; aiure of the appeal will bp a "copper trail" through the streets of the City: The object is to have a mile of pennies (42,240) in their containers —eightpence to the foot—placed along the edge of the footpaths. Numbers of children from the City and suburban schools -will contribute their pennies to the trail, which will be cared for in the evening by members of the Bible classes and other church organisations.
Anions the collectors will be Miss Esther James, who recently walked from one end of the Dominion to the other to advertise New Zealand-made goods. She, will wear the New Zealand-made "hiking" outfit that she wore on her tour.
The headquarters of tho appeal will be at Hay's, Ltd., Gloucester street, where the collectors -will be provided with refreshments. A produce stall will be placed in Victoria square. ,
