The evidence disclosed a serious state of affairs, and K-il the Magistrate to rcmarU that it was no use saying anything to tho accused about the enormity of the affair, as he appeared to be unintelligent. Senior-Sergeant McLean said that the Maoris wore defying the authorities. In ordering the accused to be detained for twelve manlhs, the Magistrate said lie could assure tho authorities that where action in thoso eases was justified be would support them : to tho utmost.
