MAORI DETAINED.
[BREACH of social hygiene I ACT. (rafcsa association tilegbau) 1 WANGANUI, July 28. An unusual charge under the Social Hygiene Act, 1917, was heard before the Magistrate (Mr Salmon) this mornnig, the accused being a young Maori from up the river. Jt is a well-known fact that the Honlth .Department lias been concerned for some time at the .spread of venereal disease among Maoris, and has been doing its .utmost to get them to submit themselves for treatment, iu the present case She accused camo to hospital for treatment, hut cleared out after two injections. The evidence disclosed a serious state of affairs, and K-il the Magistrate to rcmarU that it was no use saying anything to tho accused about the enormity of the affair, as he appeared to be unintelligent. Senior-Sergeant McLean said that the Maoris wore defying the authorities. In ordering the accused to be detained for twelve manlhs, the Magistrate said lie could assure tho authorities that where action in thoso eases was justified be would support them : to tho utmost.
