THE SLAUGHTERING ACT.
PROPTTSED AMENDMENTS OPPOSED. The suggestions by the Canterbury Butchers' Industrial Union of Employers for tho amendment of the Slaughtering and Inspection Act were discussed by the "VVaimairi County Council last evening. A resolution was passed to ask Mr R, W. Hawke, M.P., and Mr H. S. S. Kyle, M.P., to oppose the amendments when they came before Parliament. Cr Chapman said if those amendments were made law, farmers would be unable to kill their own sheepj or give a piece to a neighbour. Tho poor of Christchureh were to bo penalised to protect a monopoly. It was intended to extend tho area to 12 miles, and this would include Belfast and Kaiapoi. All through the summer mutton could be bought at 2d a lb. A member: And good mutton, too. "Yes, it is good, wholesome food," continued Cr. Chapman. "Why should I be debarred from buying a carcase and sharing it with my neighbour?" Cr. said that when the farmer killed .sheep it was very unlikely ho would kill one' that was diseased when he had to cat it himself. It was quite a different thing when it was for sale to the public. There were too many regulations.
