BETTER LIGHTING.

RICCARTON ROAD LEVEL

CROSSING.

PRIVATE CITIZEN'S GIFT.

Consequent upon the gift by Mr A. L. 'Louisson, of Riccarton, of £SO, the Railway Department has decided to instal an improved warning device at the Riccarton road railway crossing. The matter has been the subject of correspondence between the' Riccarton Borough Council and the Railway Department. At last night's meeting of tho Borough Council a letter was read from Mr Louisson enclosing his cheque for £SO.

Mr P. G. Roussell, General Manager Now Zealand Railways, wrote that in view of tho fact that the sum of £SO had been given to provide an improved warning device at the Riccarton railway crossing, the Department was prepared to undertake tho provision of standard flashing light signals at tho crossing, and arrangements were being made accordingly. Ho would be glad to receive a cheque for £SO at the Council's convenience. Regarding the Council' 3 suggestion that the wig-wag signal recovered from tho Riccarton road crossing be placed at the Stafford street crossing, he desired to say that as the last-mentioned street crossed tho Riccarton station yard, it was not a suitable crossing at which to instal a warning signal,, as automatic operation could not be satisfactorily carried out. It was regretted, therefore, that the suggestion could not be adopted. , On tho motion of Cr. R. G. Malcolmson, seconded by Cr. C. G. Mclvellar, it was decided to send a letter _of thanks to Mr Louisson for his assistance. Another Dangerous Crossing. Cr. T. M. Ford thought that the Council should renew its application for tho installation of the wig-wag signal at Stafford street, and gavo instances of the danger to pedestrians owing to trucks being left half-way across the road. Cr. H. W. Wise said that it would be just as well not to say too much about this crossing: it was railway property, and he would not like to see it closed up. Regarding the improvement to be made at the Riccarton road crossing he said that the Department for tho past 18 months had considered that there was quite sufficient light, but as snrvn no Rnmpmin pl«p war prepared to finance it, the Department was quite readv to correct things and nut in improved liorhtiner. It seemed that thev bad to pav for what was nececsarv to protect the lives of pernio. Tt was decided to renew tho annlication to have the wior-waq; erected at the Stafford street crossing.
