TIMARU AND SOUTH CANTERBURY NEWS

TIMARU.

BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Timaru Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr T. W. Sattcrthwaite) presiding. The omnibus engineer (Mr J. McKim) reported that the takings for May amounted to £707 5s 6d, compared with £BO7 10a 8d for the corresponding month last year. . The electrical engineer (Mr A. E. A. Watkins) reported that further progress had been mad© with, tho installation, or the duplicate 11,000-volt line, and duo to the number of bends and the necessity of shackling so often the work was necessarily slow. The Finance Committee xecommenaerl an expenditure of £22 8s 5d for tho installation of better lighting in the Council Chamber and committee room. The committee approved permission being granted to the Central Relief Society to hold a street day in connexion with the Mayor's Coal and Blanket Fund. A letter had been received from the Railway Department agreeing to the Council's offer to supply water at the rate of £250 per annum for a minimum supply of 8,000,000 gallons and 4d per thousand gallons in excess thereof. The General Committee recommended, in reply to a letter from the West End Association suggesting that a permanent caretaker should be appointed for the West End Park, that there was not sufficient duties to warrant such an appointment, but that if any officer of the West End Association v/as willing'to act in this capacity, the necessary power would be given to him by the Council to deal with acts of vandalism. The South Canterbury Automobile Association's suggestions regarding the rounding of corners were considered, and it was resolved to recommend tjiat no general action be taken at present, but that a report be made by Inspector Booth as to the dangerous corner which existed by reason of a high hedge at the junction of Wai-iti road and Beverley road. The Borough Engineer (Mr T. O. Fox) reported that the reforming of Craigie avenue had been completed on the west side as far as King street. A number of slips occurred on the water-race in consequence of heavy rain on May 9th. Thirty-two men were engaged for five days in clearing these, and during the period tho level of the water in the reservoirs fell 12ft. Much work of a routino nature had been done in the period as, for example, the replacement of corroded service pipes and the repair of meters, stopcocks, and fire-plugs. Seven building permits had been issued of a total value of £2444. These included one dwelling, three house additions, ono shop, one shop alterations, and one garage. Tho boat-shed on Caroline Bay had been completed with the exception of the netting, which was on order. The boat and its undercarriage had been painted. The committee's recommendation was approved. Strong opposition was voiced by Crs. M. H. Richards, J. R. Hart, and G. Ben.«tead to the proposed offer of £75 to the Gas Company for ono and a half perches of land for street widening at the corner of Arthur and Perth streets, the contention toeing that the value of the land was far below the proposedmonetwy offer. Cr. Benstead criticised tho negotiations as thoroughly unbusinesslike, declaring that the Council should have asked the company for a bedrock price before offering to erect ' a brick wall at a cost of £SO. The Mayor admitted that £75 was more than the land's value, but stated that thiV was the only means of securing it, which was necessary for the safety of traffic. The recommendation was adopted. The Mayor referred to a'letter from the Chamber of Commerce regarding printing tenders, stating that Timaru printers apparently had no grievance as no' deputations or correspondence had been received from them. .He concluded they were, satisfied with tho proposition. Three applicants for the position of reserves curator were interviewed, ajid Mr A. W. Anderson, of Dunedin, was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr D. N. Harper. Personal. Dr. R.
