GOLF.

SARAZEN'S RECORD AT SANDWICH.

BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP

(USITID *MBSS ABBOCUTIOIT—SI BMCTMO TELEGRAPH —COFrtIOHT.) LONDON, June 9. In the British Open Golf Championship to-day 64 scores under .154 qualified for tho final two rounds. Gene Sarazen still leads with an aggregate of 139. Windless, midsummer weather favoured low scores at Sandwich to-day. Sarazen achieved a record for the first half of the championship with 139, Bobby Jones's 140 at St. Andrew's in 1927 being tho previous best. Sarazen admitted that his great second round was partly due to patehes of good luck, but it included a number of brilliant recoveries from awkward places. His greatest shot was at the twelfth, where ho sliced his drive into thick rough, and a mighty 180-yard heavy mashio Bhot put him on the edge ol tho green. lie laid his approaches dead, needing only one putt at each of five greens. Alliss and Davies were terribly disappointing. Both had the opportunity of gaining the lead, but Alliss cracked at the fifteenth. Davies, if he had secured par figures for tho last five, would have done 68, but in a melancholy finish he dropped a stroke at every hole. Despite Sarazen's lead nobody has in anywise abandoned hope of a British victory. MaeDonald Smith had an uphill struggle, as ho began disastrously with a seven at the first hole. T. Armour had such a disappointing first nine that the crowd deserted him; nevertheless, he came home brilliantly in 33, comprising six 4's and three 3's. Thoso who qualified include: —

Those who failed to qualify for the final rounds include T. Miyamoto (Japan) 79, 79, 158; G. Duncan 80, 80, 160; and J. de Forest 82, 84, 166. The Hon. Michael Scott, Who scored 81 in the first round, made no roturn.
