RANGIORA. Tli« executive of the Rangiora Returned Soldiers' Association met on Saturday evening, tho president, Mr J. W. McLeod, presiding. Present: Messrs 0. How, D. Hill, A. R. Smith, F. Lowe, L. Reed, T. Henderson, F. 1 W. Reynolds, E. Ellis, W. N. Forgeson, and F. Hunt. Lieutenant-Colonel C. Herbert Evans, president of the Melbourne sub-brauch of tho New Zealand Association, wrote on behalf of ex-New Zealand soldiers in Victoria. He stated that there were over 130 New Zealand Expeditionary Force men and other New Zealanders who served with the Allied Forces. They felt the want of a club-room or permanent office where business meetings could be held and members could meet for social purposes. Not being in a financial position, they naked if the subbrnnchea in New Zealand would assist them to obtain their object. It was decided to make a grant. A letter from the Christchurch R.S.A. asking that the Association be represented at a conference of executives of subbranches of the Association, to he held iu the Jellicoe Hall on Juno 22nd, for the purpose of discussing remits forwarded to the Dominion Conference of the Association, was received, and it was decided to advise that tho Rangiora Executive would he represented. The Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association Entertainment Committee consented to put on an orchestral and variety entertainment in the Town Hall on June 14th, in aid of tho Association's funds. Mr F. W. Reynolds ■was appointed the Association's dclcgjito to tho Dominion Conference, to bo held in Wellington on Juno 28th and 29th. Two applications from members who had taken up residence in Christchurch asking to be transferred to the Christchurch Association wore granted. Tho Amherlcy Association asked support with regard to a remit forwarded by thorn to the Dominion Conference: That soldiers' sons be eligible for membership of tho R.S.A. It was agreed to support the remit. A match was played yesterday afternoon between the second fifteen of St. Rede's College, Christelmrcb, and the first fifteen of the Rangiora Hic;h School, and resulted in a win for Rangiora by 11 points to 8. The game wa« very even, tho home team having the hotter of the first spell and the visitors cf the second. KAIKOURA. The Kaikoura Basketball Club's team journeyed to Blenheim to participate in the Marlborough Association's annual tournament, held at Lansdowne Park on Friday. There were 21 teams taking part, and Ivaikoura A were successful in winning two games and drawing in one, but wore beaten in the -semi-final. Kaikoura B, in their section, won three games, had a bye, and were beaten in the semi-final by St. Mary's Old Girls' A. " There was a fair attendance at the dance held in the Drill Hall on Saturday night in honour of the visiting footballers. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr "W. Thomas (piano), and Mr IV Reardon (drums and effects). Extras were played by Mrs H. Baker and Miss E. Milligan. Mr Ivan Gill was M.C. HANMER SPRINGS. The annual meeting of the Anglican Ladies' Guild was held in the church home. The president, Mrs H. R. Heath, was in the chair. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted, the latter showing a credit balance of £4 Bs. A talents scheme was proposed and adopted as a means of raising tho necessary funds to pay off tho debt on the piano recently purchased. It -was decided to hold a special guild church service annually. The election of officers resulted in the reelection of the president, Mrs H. K. Heath, and the secretary, Miss McNab, Mrs E. B. Moore -with Mrs E. E. Peek as vice-presidents, Miss A. Lahmcrt assistant secretary, Mrs Stavart and Miss Coleman as visiting members of the committee. SCARGILL. The members of the Seargill Club held their weekly shoot on' fc>aturday ovening, when the following were the best scores returned: G. Panuett 69, J. Love- 68, W. Fleming 63, L. MeNaughton OS, K. Samuels (juniors). i f OXFORD. j The first anniversary of the opening of the Town Hall was celebrated by a social and dance on Friday night. Music was provided by Mr E. Knowles' band, and extras were given by Mr E. Knowles and Miss Baxter. The dancing was interspersed with vocal items by Mrs C. E. Johnson; Miss Taylor (Rangiora), and Mr J. A. Fautls. Facilities for study of present-day problems are being provided by the local branch of the Workers' Educational Association. At present the tutor (Mr H. C. D. Somerset, M.A.) is delivering a course of lectures on "Modern Tendencies in Scieuce." The Drama Circle, which meets fortnightly at the tutor's house, is studying Arnold Bennett. CLARKVILLE. A basketball match between Clarkville and Kaiapoi resulted in a win for Clarkville by 18 goals to 6. LEITHFIELD. The annual meeting of the Leitlifield Domain Board was held during the week. There was a full attendance of members. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £lO4 lis. It was decided to spend the money on various improvements when relief workers were available. Two tennis courts will be laid down in bitumen. Mr H. May was reelected chairman, and Mr J. W. Sarich secretary; committee, Messrs J. Fitzpatrick, D. McLean, F. H. James, C. J-J. Hadley, J. Ash worth, and J. fc>. Eusscll. The fortnightly social was held on Saturday. Competitions were won by Miss Phyllis James, Miss Betty Sarich, Mr Walter Parker, and Mr Fitzgibbon. Miss Fiupatrick supplied the music, and Mr W. Culling was M.C. OURUHIA. There is a movement on foot to form a debating society in Ouruhia and district. At a recent meeting ot the Park Committee a plan was tentatively adopted for the from the entrance along the creek, to take the form of three' bays, with intervening stretches of sward running down to a wido pathway, along the creek: one bay to be planted with rhododendrons and azaleas, one possibly with roses, and the other with native veronicas. Mr Brown's offer to furnish one of the bays was accepted with thanks. Mr and Mrs W. P. Spencer, Spencerville, entertained about 30 guests at a kitchen evening in honour of Miss Mario McMillan, whose wedding to Mr V. Giles took place on Friday. Another gift evening for Miss Marie McMillan was held on Wednesday evening, the hostess being Mrs F. L. Anderson, Hawkesbury avenue, St. Albans. Mrs F. Anderson (Tiniaru) and Miss Mabel Spencer (Invcrcargill) have been visiting their parents, Mr and Mrs W. P. Spencer, Spenecrvillc, for tho past week. BUR WOOD. The s-ccond of the scries ot socials and dances, arranged by the United Associations, was held in the Burwood Hall on Saturday evening. Tlioro was a good attendance. Miss C. Stackhouse and Mr J. Peters wero winners in the competitions. Mr Wilson's orchestra provided the music for dancing. Mr D. Haffender was the M.C. DARFIELD. A successful evening promoted by the Women's Committee of the Combined Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Clubs was held in the Darh'cld Memorial Hall on Friday. There was a good attendance- of residents of the district. Cards and dancing were enjoyed, and supper was served. Music for the dance was supplied by Mr A. Hart, and Mrs 11. Edbrookc provided extras. The first monthly meeting of the Women's Committee of the Combined Sports Club held in the lounge of tho Memorial Hall was well attended. The president, Mrs D. McMillan, presided, and welcomed several new working members. Gifts of useful materials were received, and the women present spent the afternoon cutting out and sewing. A large box of chocolates was received. Convenors were elected for tiio sewing stalls at the forthcoming fair. Afternoon tea was provided. HORNBY. The Hornby third grade football team held their weekly dance on Saturday night at the Orange Hall. Then* was a good attendance. Tom Lawlor's orchestra, from ltakaia, supplied the music. Mr It. Fahcy was M.C. The Monte Carlo wait?, was won by Miss 11. Cook and Mr J. Fahcy. A competition was won by Mr J. Fahcy. At St. David's Presbyterian Church, Hornbv, on Sunday night, Mr K. Lilly started a scries of lectures on "Vital Issues." Ho preached on Christianity and unemployment. Comniuiutv singing was held before the service. Mr J). Bernstein, of New Brighton, sang a solo. GREENPARK. At the invitation of Mrs C. Watson, between 30 and 40 guests assembled at her home, Tc Koa Glen, on Saturday evening, when the time was spent with games and competitions. Vocal solos were given by Mr L. Pimm, and Miss F. Musgrove (Christchurch) recited. Mrs Larsen won a competition. Tho Itev. N. P. Larsen expressed thanks to Mr and Mrs Watson for the use of their home, and to those who had arranged the programme. Each guest brought a silver coin for the Greenpark Kewpic, which the district is supporting in the Kewpic contest being run in connexion with the Methodist Church Gipsy Fair. PREBBLETON. The dance held in the Prebbleton Hall on Saturday evening was arranged by the footballers. StamJcr's band supplied the music, extras being played by Miss Joyce Kolkman. Competitions held during the evening wero won bv Mrs L. A. Gallagher, Mrs JEasterbrook, Mr It. Macpherson, and Mr C. Watson. Mr C. Kolkman was tho M.C. Mr and Mrs G. Downey and family have left Prebbletvm to live in Christchurch, where they have acquired a business. Mr and Mrs Mackintosh arc leaving Prebbleton soon to go into business in Christchxirch. Mr L. Kolkman has left to live at Rangiora, where he has purchased a farm. Prebbleton's iirst basketball team journeyed to Tai Tapu on Saturday, where they defeated the local players by 11 goals to ]. The second team, playing at homo, were defeated by Ta) Tapu by 5 goals to 2. A pleasant evening was spent on Saturday ;it the residence of Mr and Mrs A. L. Clarke. Prebbleton, when the- guests enjoyed progressive euchre. Successful players during the evening were Mrs A. Wing and Mr Alan Giles, a consolation prize being awarded to Mr A. J". Giles. BROOMFIELD. A (hinee was held at Broomlield in aid of the school funds. Dance music was provided bv Los. Kinsman's band. Mr Croft was M.C. A hare drive was held on the King's birthday over properties belonging to Messrs J. W. Strteter and S. Gardiner, and the Broomfield estate. Between sixty and seventy guns were out, and by evening some 190 hares were bagged.
AKAROA. I The Peninsula Hockey Association J held a dance at Duvauchelle on Friday night. There was a large attendance, and the programme was varied with old-time and modern dances. Music was supplied by Mr and Mrs J. C. Tika-o and the Aldridge Orchestra. Mr Hector Norrie was the M.C. A novelty snowball dance was won by Miss Kelly and B. Turpin. The lucky spot waltz was won by Mr and Mrs W. W. Eeid. Only one match has been played in the Hockey Association's competition, and the result was: Okains A 7, Akaroa nil. .
