COUNTY COUNCILS

ASHLEY.. Tho Ashley County Council mei at l.oburn. Present: Messrs McOracken, Macleod, Methoroll, Mackintosh, Pulley, and Wilson. By authority from the Minister, the election of chairman took place, tho clerk presiding. Pulley and Wilson wcro nominated, and the voting was equal. On the drawing of lots Mr Wilson was chosen, Mr Metherell was elected deputy-chairman. Mr A. H. Murray interviewed the Council, asking a reconsideration of his application for gates on the No. 1 road at his boundaries, and on the No. 2 road south at the highway. It was agreed to advertise the request .and to make a decision at tho next meeting. Mr D. R. Hutchison forwarded h.c resignation, as the Council's representative, of bis position on the Patriotic Committee, tho Progress League, and the District Council, and the chairmau, Mr Wilson, was appointed. Mr Macleod reported that the matter of growing linseed adjacent to an orchard affected a few farmers only, and these had been nsked by the Fruitgrowers' Association to sow normally early. Tho striking of tho rate for the currentyear was ■ considered in detail, and with a view to uvgent economy the Council accepted Mr Pulley's proposal to strike a retieral rate of three-eighths of a penny in the £. The need of payment of arrears of rates was stressed, and it was decided that the Council's solicitors be authorised to collect. WAIPARA. At the r.djouvned annual meeting of the Woipara. County Council, there were prefent: Crs. W. K.. McAlmno, J- Quisßv, and J. G. Whyte. Cr. McAlpino was elected chairman lot the cnbuing year. The County Clerk asked to be released fiom his position of returning officer for the County. Mr V. J. Rhodes was appointed returning officer and it was decided to ask him to carry out tho election for two candidates on June 34th. Accounts amounting to i'lTo<> were parsed for payment.
