CANTERBURY LAMB.

FARM

sumably small Corriedales, which owing to weight are designated as lambs, though in no irespect entitled to be classed as. such. The North Island is largely increasing its supply of prime quality, bred from Bomney ewes by Southdown, so much so that the time is near when there may be no export of ewes from tho East Coast. Undoubtedly, these Bomney cross ewes have .filled a gap, for the average Canterbury crossbred ewe is not suitable to mate with the Southdown. The Byelands might be worth a trial. Canterbury's position is challenged. And now Australia is coming to the fore, and with her immense reserves will prove a formidable rival. In that country, there are many stud' flocks of the Border Leicester breed which can be, used for crossing with* the merino. Now this was the very cross which at the outset of the trade in the 'eighties proved so successful here. The Australian merino, being of a larger frame, will do even better than ours, and further the ewes of that cross will be ideal for mating with the Southdown.—Yours, etc., BETIBED. May 19th, 1932.
