__ | PERSONAL. i Mr nnd Mrs J. T. (). Stephens and family, West Lyttelton, left yesterday to take up their residence at Akaroa. Old Cable Unearthed. Wliilo excavating a trciich to lay pipes in Andersons Foundry yesterday workmen unearthed part of the cables of the original electric lighting system in Lyttelton. The cable had been laid 48 years ago, and was conduited In heavy totara battens and sealed with pitch. The wood was in an excellent state of preservation. The history of the lighting of the wharves at Lyttelton by electricity goes j back half a century. In 1882 wharves were lighted by 28 gas-lai and the feasibility of establishing i separate gasworks was considered by the Board. However, reports on electric light were received, and by June, 1882, a few electric lights were installed on the wharves by way of experiment. It was not till 1884 that a full plant, with belt-driven dynamos, was installed. The increasing demand for current necessitated frequent extensions to the plant, and in 190G a BritisuWestinghouse direct-driven plant was installed. In 1917 the Board accepted the supply of current from the Lake Coleridge power station, and the steamdriven plant was sold. Ambulance Association. It is announced that tho following members of the Lyttelton Nursing Division, who have received instruction tn first' aid to the injured under the auspices of the St. John Ambulance Association (Canterbury and West Coslst Centre) have passed the examination and qualified for the certificate of the Association:—Mesdames K. A. Lllingworth, E. J. Anderson, S. A. Hoyle, M. Ings, Misses D. E. Beaumont, G. G. A. Silcoclc, H. P- McNaughton, M. Thompson, J. Thompson D. Hoyle, C. A. Paulger, B. Dunlop, C. Hemslej, Seymour. .
