Nominations for the Greymouth Jockey Club's Winter Meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Saturday. Acceptances for the South Canterbury Autumn Meeting will close at 9 p.m. on Monday next. New Arrivals. C. Emerson ves tor day received Concentrate and Oratorian from Mr R. J l . Murphy, thus completing his team for that owner, which in addition to this pair is comprised of Gesture, Oratorioug, Martian Chief, and Early Cup. The f'hokebore team will be further strengthened this week by the arrival from •Stonyhurst of a yearling colt, Grouse, by Day Comet from Moorfowl, and a two-year-old gelding, Dorian, brother it> Zeebrugge. For Ellerslie. The Invercargill trainer, i\ J. McKay, arrived at Biscarton yesterday with Paris, Apache, Irish Chieftain, and * Taramoa, and will proceed to Wellington to-night en route to Ellerslie. Apache was not started at the Southland Meeting owing to lameness, but the ailment was not bad enough to eaufie cancellation of his northern trip. The stable horseman, G. Dempster, will accompany the team. Bacipg at Ashburton. The Ashburton County Baeiug Club have received excellent acceptances for their autumn Meeting to be held ou Saturday, the fields for the five galloping events averaging eleven. It is worthy of mention that only four of the large number nominated will not put iii an appearance, and in the case of two races there was only one defection, whilfc in tbe Hying Handicap l all those handicapped were paid up for. ; High-weight Event. • The Longbeacli Hack Handicap,' under high-weight conditions, has drawn » very useful field, including Crash and * Bed Boyal, who had a sustained tussle over the same distance at the recent * Amberley Meeting while another winner at that fixture in Execution is also carded. Merry Peel, Some Good an»l Loehard have been winners in the past few months, and Adult has encouraging track work to his credit. The contest should provide an interesting opening for thef programme, and Bed Boyal, Crash, and Some Good will probably engage most attention on the day. The Autumn Handicap. The field for the principal event, the Autumn Handicap, is not strong numerically, but class is fairly well represented. An interesting acceptor is Bed Ileekle, who has been off the sceno for some time, but has had a good stretch of track worjp He invariably races well when fresh, and can be depended upon to make a good showing on this occasion. Straightcourse has not yet struck the form he reached pilot to his accident in September' last, but hat nevertheless given'every satisfaction in his tra'ek gallops. Dunraven has developed into a handsome gelding, btft has not as 's racehorse. If he produced his best he would have the field in trouble through Out. Don Jose did well at Amljerley and seems to be gradually getting bad to hit best. Of the remainder, Westh erly makes most appeal. This will b< hie first attempt in open company, bu l his reeent form points to liis prospect" being -very favourable. Again a closi tussle should be witnessbd, and at thii stage Bed Heckle, WeatKerly," ari< Don Jose can be sorted out to supplj the favodrite division. For Non-Winners. The Tr»l Stakes, for .two-year-oldi and upwards, non-winners, has som< promising sprinters engaged, includinj Brown Pearl, Bcfcket,.Natural, Usque baugh, Silver Sight, Golden Dart, Aze vedo, and Topthorn. It is difficult t< forecast -the favourite, but Socket Topthorn, and Brown Pearl are entitler to serious consideration. Good Class Hacks. A mile and a quarter hack race usu ally provides an interesting contest and the Fairfield Hack Handicap look likely to sustain the record. The Am berley winner, Hounslow, will piobablj bo favourite, but there will be plenty of support for the Chokeboro filly East Passage; who was made first choici for the Great Northern Oaks, and wouli probably have won btit for meeting wit] a mishap in a race. Oraigavon am Night Flyer seem* to be. the most like!; «f the remainder to master the distance and the latter has a" good opportunit; to make amends for the ill-luck he ha suffered in several of his races. Houn> low, Fast Passage, and Night Flyej a present comprise a likely'trio to diaput the honours. - !

The Open Sprinters. One of the best fields brought together in a six furlong race at Ashburton will parade in the Plying Handicap, and useful recent form is strongly represented, Gold Pit, Limited, and Arrowmir will probably supply the favourite on the day. Racing at Brisbane. ( Handicap lists now to hand for the principal events at the Queensland Turf Club's Meeting, to be held at Brisbane on June 3rd and 4th, show that 'J. M. Cameron has given himself the chance, perhaps not a very rosy one, of winning the big double of the first day, the Stradbroke Handicap, six furlongs, and the Brisbane Cup, two milos. In the sprint race he has Lotus Lily engaged, and she will have to carry only 7st Dlb> the top-weight being Lady Linden, flst 101b. In the Cup event ho has Nea Lap in at 7st 111b, another New Zealander in Chide being at the head with 9st 101b. Nea Lap is also down for a run in the More ton Handicap, 11 miles, on the second day. In this she is asked to carry Bst lib, as against the top-weight's Ost 121b. In Queensland, ns here in New Zealand, tho nunimum weight is 7st. High Sire Tees. A recent publication from America shows that sire fees are maintained there at a high level. Sun Briar, sire of Sun Beau, world's record stake-win-ner, heads the list at £IOOO. Then follow Sir Gallahad 111. £6OO, Gallant Fox £6OO, Teddy £SOO, and Black Toncy £SOO. In England Solario's fee is £SOO. Record Price Offered. Great interest will attach, to the price offered for Solario. ([Gainsborough—Sun Worship) when he goes to auction in England in July, wit-h other horses in the estate of tho late Sir John Rutherford. Tho Aga Khanwas once prepared to give £IOO,OOO l'or the stallion. Solario, who is ten yeaTs old, won the St. Leger in 1925, and Ascot Gold Cup in 1926, and his list is full for this year and next at a fee of .500 guineas. Solario's son, Orpen, who ran second in last year's Derby and St. Leger, is another to bo offered at the samo time as Solario. He was. also owned by .Sir John Rutherford. A Drastic Rule. In New Zealand there are many trainers who have difficulty in making ends meet that action similar to that recently taken in Germany by the ruling racing body would hit many. A trainer's license was withdrawn . because his unsettled financial position did not , offer sufficient surety for his properly conducting tho training of horses placed in his care. Germany s racing authorities evidently have no t-itaie for those trainers whose financial position is so precarious that proper feeding of their charges is almost too much to expect. trotting notes. Reminders. Nominations for the Canterbury Park T.C.'s Winter Meeting close at noon Nominations for the Hawke's Bay T.C.'s annual fixture, to be held on • June 3rd and. 4tli, close to-day at 8 p.m. . . Nominations for tho trotting events OH the Greyrnouth J.C-.'s programme close on Saturday at 9 p-m. Acceptances for the trotting; events at the fSouth Canterbury J.C.'s, Meeting close on Monday at 0 p.m. Responded Well. The Ashburton County > Bacing Club has reason to feel pleased with the ready response received from owners of horses accepting fpr the light-har-ness races on the programme for the Meeting to be held on Saturday. Of thirtysix nominations received for the Selma Handicap, thirty horses continued their engagements and twenty-three of the thirty-one horses nominated -in tho Rakaia Handicap have accepted. , C anterbury-Owned Mure; Anon Bhowed her most promising form u since going to the North Island when j she ran second in the principal'event 1 at the Thames Meeting last Saturday. ■ Direct Morning was the only horse in ' front of her turning into the straight, ' witlj Kewple's Triumph coming fast on 1 the outside, but she tired in the run to " the post and-she just held oft Warspite ' in the battle for second money. 3 A Olosaic Contender. The two-ye&r-old pacing colt Eighteen '' Carat, by Sungod—Pure Gold, was giten c a run down the straight, when the horses " for the Dash Trot were doing their ,pree liminary, at the Southland Mectt ing last Saturday. This colt, who olaims 8 an engagement in the New Zealand Sape ling Stakes is owned and trained by S. ® Todd, at Invercargill; and although ho was nominated for the Ashburton Meety ing on Saturday, his nanje was missing, from the acceptances. Easy Tasks. 8 Germanicus, who showed signs of e soreness before the Oamaru Meeting, but S? who was sound enough when raced- last Saturday, is at present being restricted to light exercise in the meantime. s» Name Claimed: Waress, an acceptor in the Selma Trot Handicap at Ashburton, is tho filly who was nominated in that race as the Man o' War—lvy Mac filly.; Ivy Mac is by l * General Mac from Manuka, a sister to Ribbonwood. M . i- With Early Engagements. y R. J. Marshall lias Clem Dawe looking y and working in forward order at pror > sent. Clem Dawe raced fairly well at ® the Amberley Meeting, arid lie will be jj seen out again at Ashburton on Sat- £ urday. J Given Another Trial. . Sir Author has been taken in hand again by C. S. Donald, in the hope of his standing another preparation. Unsoundness has prevented this horse , 0 from attaining high-class honours on the race-track. „ Auckland Visitor. . ' • . The Auckland Sportsman, Mr G. MeKendrick, breeder of tbose good Blue Mountain King mares, Free Advice and First Flight, was a visitor to Christ- • church during the week, when on his way south. 1 Candidates for Sapling Stakes, p There are np less than seven Sapling Stakes candidates included in,.the field ■for the Selma Handicap, to be decided at Ashburton on. Saturday. They in elude: —Betty Wrack, trained by J, Young; Cloudy Bange and Indianapolis trained by J. Behrns; Golden Cross (J D. Smith), Golden Direct .(If. G Holmes), Good Companion (D. With era), and Mary Harvester (C. E. Lind say). Midnight San on Better Terms. The placed horses in the two-nail< event at Amberley, Gold Spear, Shaw ingaa, and Midnight Sun, meet agaii on Saturday at Ashburton, but on this occasion, ihe class of the .race being faster and Gold Spear and Shawingai having earned penalties, Midnight Sux 4 meets the jfair on infinitely better terms

CANTERBURY J.C.

A SATISFACTORY YEAR. The report of the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club, to be presented to the annual meeting of members to be held on May 25th, states that considering the financial stringency during the past year the year's operations showed a fairly satisfactory result, which, ; however, had' -been achieved largely at the sacrifice of owners. To meet an anticipated decline in revenue, stakes were reduced by £11,515, and a reduction was made in all other items of expenditure, the result being a small loss on the year. Members (states- the report) will join with the committee in deploring the death of Mr C. G. Dalgety,. who served the club well as a committeeman and steward for many years. Two other members, in Messrs C. F. D'Auvergne and J. Wood, also died during the year. No election is for the offices of stewards and honorary treasurer owing .to the requisite number having been nominated, but an election for the committee will be hold, fifteen nominations for thirteen seats having been received. The balance-sheet shows that at the end of last financial year, April 30th, 1931, the balance due to the bank was £16,201 19s 5d and for this year ending on April 30th last, the amount was £16,439 17s 6d, leaving a net working loss on the twelve months of £237 18s Id. ✓ The principal receipts were:—
