COUNTY COUNCILS
♦ ELLESMERE. The monthly meeting of Ihe Kllosmero County Council, held at Leeston on Monday, was attended by Crs. John Heslop (chairman), R. T. McMillan, A. Quigley, A. Anderson, and John Nixon. A report submitted by the engineer (Mr T R Wright) upon the road repair and drain cleaning work done during the month was considered and adopted. He stated that high seas had blocked the Taumutu and Cooper s lagoon culverts with shingle, but' that the material had since heen removed. There wero 16 men at work under the unemployment scheme* Eight ratepayers petitioned the Council to shingle the Tramway road from Allen's estate frontage to McLenaghen'B, and 60 chains of the Branch road towards Eraser's corner. The engineer stated that the cost would be about £960. .„ ~,_ i .. „ -, ~ The chairman said that the Council could not afford to spend such a large sum on the roads mentioned this year, but consideration would be given the request when the estimates were being framed. It was decided to invite tenders for cleaning drains fronting Messrs L. Mortarty and J. Simpson's properties at Southbridge, and for other drains at Brookside Killinchy serving the properties cf Messrs T. W. Brooks, G°Pearce, and A. E. Rathgen. Permission was granted to the Selwyn Plantations Board to fence off part of the Bakaia-Irwell roadway.
