A JERSEY RECORD.

853L8 IN 265 DAYS. Interest in the dairy world at present is centred around a four-year-old Jersey heifer, "Woodlands Felicie, which, on the returns already available, is easily setting a record for New Zealand, and establishing figures that promise to go very close to a world's record. Up till the end of April this heifer is credited with 8531b fat in only 265 days, which is far and away above any performance yet registered in the Dominion. Thus in only 8J months out of the twelve she has already exceeded the existing New Zealand record for a four-year-old of 8141b fat and with nearly four months to go, given reasonable opportunity, she should set a new standard in butter-fat production for New Zealand. Woodlands Felicie is the daughter of an imported Jersey bull, Bright Sultan, and when offered for auction at Mr P. J. Petersen's sale last year she failed to find a buyer. As she was led out of the ring Mr Petersen remarked that he was going to put her .under test and break four figures with her. It would seem that he is a good prophet.

indigenous strains has shown after a period that there remains 72 per cent, of the sown grasses and 7 per cent, only of unsown grasses, and a moderate number of weeds. Commercial or nonpedigree strains standing for the same period show 40 per cent, only of sown grasses and 21 per cent, to 25 per cent, of unsown grasses, and a much larger quantity of weeds. This in itself is a gigantic testimony, but if we give you a few more details it should be helpful. The indigenous, leafy strains of rye grass, cocksfoot, etc., that are offered in our catalogue have been saved from plants found only on the oldest established grasslands. In the case of Akaroa cocksfoot the pasture from which the seed was saved was established eighty years ago and the sward has never been broken. The ordinary commercial cocksfoot is short-lived and not of nearly so much value for long duration pastures. Hawke's Bay Ryegrass. There is apparently a considerable trade opening up with Australia also in New Zealand grass seed. Hawke's Bay perennial rye is being widely advocated in several Australian States. The Australian Dairy Produce Board, which is instituting grassland experiments in the different States, has secured a large parcel of Hawke's Bay certified rye for j the experiments. I
