NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. In the Celtic Hall, Rangiora, rerimtly, Mr and Mrs George Brady entertained a number of friends at a social evening in celebration of the coming of age of their eldest daughter, Monica. O'Loughlin and partner. The Mayor, Mr W. A. Rowse, convened a meeting of the Rangiora Benevolent Committee on Monday evening. Those present were the Revs. VV. R. Hutchison, S. Henderson, A. C. Purchase, Ensign/Smith, and Messrs W. Stalker (chairman of the Rangiora County Council), F. Horrell (representing the Hospital Board), and J Dawnon (secretary to the Rangiora unemployed). The Mayor, who presided, explained that there was a feeling among the unemployed that enough was not being done to relieve the distress in the towu, and they thought that a relief depot should be opened immediately. If the committee thought a relief depot was necessary he was prepared to take up the matter. Most of the ministers reported that although there wore cases of hardship, there were very few cases of distress in the town. Mr Horrell pointed out that there was no need to go short of foodstuffs as the Board was quite prepared to give assistance in that respect. It was decided that steps should be taken to open a depot about June Ist and that an appeal be made for boots and clothing. Arrangements for a suitable depot were left in the hands of the Town Clerk. In the absence of the N.G., Bro. J. Cooke. D.G.M., presided at the meeting of the Loval Ranaiora Lod<_re of Manchester Unity Oddfellows on Mondav niicht. A motion of sympathy .with the V G., Bro G. The annual meeting of the North Canterbury Miniature Rifle Sub-Asso-ciation was hold in Mr Saundercock'« office, when there were present Messrs H. Saundercock (Waikari), president, J. Earl (Waikari), \V. Anderson, P. Dunbar (Waiau), D. Scott, W. Doali (Hawarden), E. Foster, G. Panuett (Seargill). The balance-sheet, showing a smalt credit, was adopted. It was decided that teams in future consist of ton men, the eight highest scoies to count; also, if only seven shots appeared on the target, the marker guarantee i.ho other shot. The Affiliated Club will now consist of Hawarden, Scargill, Waiau, and Waikari representatives. The election of officers resulted: — Patron, Mr J. Smellie; president. Mr G. Pannett; vice-presidents, Messrs P. Dunbar, J. Earl, D. Scott. E. Foster, and M. Hare; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr G. Gregg; auditor, Mr T. O. Johnson; official checker, Mr W. Konealy. Messrs G. CHEVIOT. The monthly meeting of St. .lohn's Ladies' Guild, Cheviot, was held in the lounge rooms. A "bring and buy" sale was held during the afternoon, the proceeds to be devoted to the fancy work stall, which . will benefit considerably. A competition was won by Mrs G. Widdup. LINCOLN. Organised by the women's Basketball Club, a farewell social was tendered to Mrs Colin Hobson. The time was spent with games, competitions, and dancing. Mrs Hobson received many .gifts. Mr C. Howell, on behalf of the Basketball Club, presented her with a silver teaoot, cream jug, and sugar bowl. Mr Hobson replied for his wife. Miss A. Moreland and Mr H. Mills gave vocal items. Ashby's Band supplied the music for the dancing. Min A. Moreland played some extras, end Mr A. J. Lysaght was M.C . LITTLE RAKAIA. In aid of the school funds, a social was held in the Little Rakaia School, at which there was a good attendance. First prizes for competitions were won by Miss E. Gabbie and Mr A. Carroll, and second prizes by Miss W. Home and Mr M. Home, jun. Dance music was supplied by Mrs J. P. McEvedy, and Mr J. Young was M.C. SOUTHBRIDGE. A monthly meeting of the Southbridge Town Board, held on Monday evening, was attended by Cmrs. J. H. Hampton, T. H. Bennett, W. M. Nidd, W. G. Hill, J. C. Hampton, and M. Maw. The chairman reported that the credit balance at the bank was £233 6s Bd. Advice was received from the Main Highways Board that the subsidy on highways maintenance would be at the same rate as last year, £3 for £l. It was decided to provide exit lights at the town hall to comply with the regulations. It was also agreed that pipes at Malcolmson's corner should be replaced with nine-inch pipes. LADBROOKS. The women's basketball team played & match with the Tai Tapu team and won by six points to four. The annual meeting of residents to elect a committee for the hall and to receive the report and balance-sheet was presided over by Mr F. W. Meyer. It was decided to commence the weekly socials next week. Tho following were elected to the committee: Messrs p VV. Meyer (chairman), G. Habgood K. McCarthy, G. McCarthy, J. Bell ' F. J. Coles, C. AKAROA. The annual meeting of the Akaroa Ladies' H cksy Club was held on Thursday. Miss Ismay Hay ward presided over a good attendance of members. A large number of people accepted the invitation of the Tai lapu and Districts Farmers' Union to attend a social in the Greenpark Memorial rial . The president, Mr J. The music for the dancing, was suplied by Mrs Marks, extras being played bv Miss Templeton (Motukarara), Miss M. Clark (Lincoln), and Mr E. Stalker was M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss V. Hynes and the Rev. A. H. Acheson. Songs were contributed by Mrs A. Mcßean (Springston South) and Mrs T. Foster (Ladbrooks), the accompanists being Miss E. Macartney and Bliss N. Clark. A competition, "Something new from something old" brought forward some useful articles, which will be sent to Nurse Maude (Christchurcb). The prize, given by Miss Hynes (Tai lapu), For the best article, was awarded to Miss S. Smith (Springston), the judges being Mesdames Templeton, Bailey, and Miss Hynes. Reference was made to the valuable work done by. the secretary of the Women's Division, Miss Helen Fiecken. On the occasion of her approaching marriage «»e president, Mrs Henderson, on behalf of the members, asked her to accept a silver tea Service and crystal vase. LEESTON. A meeting of the Ellesmere Gun Club Committee was presided over by Mr J. Winchester, president. Arrangements were made for the annual £OO live pigeon match and duck dinner to be held on May 28th The i-prize-money was allocated as follows: First, £3O; second, £10; third, £6; fourth, £4. It was decided-, to accept half nominations. It was stated that at least 80 ducks would bo required | for tho dinner, and the members present undertook to supply as many as possible. It was left to tho president to arrange for a concert party from Christchurcb. The president reported that practically all the dates chosen for the club's shoots throughout the season had been agreed to by the conference of gun club representatives held in Christclmrch. KIRWEE. With their parents, tho past and present pupils of St. George's Sunday school met to bid farewell to Miss M. Hunter, who has been their teacher for the past six years. Miss Hunter was presented with a bouquet by Monica Uelgrave. Myra Stewart presented Miss Hunter with a palm bowl and brass book ends. A competition was won by Mrs A. Anderson. SPRINGFIELD. A social in aid of the school funds was held recently. There was a good attendance. Prizes were won by Mis-i Mead and Miss McKay, and Mr X<. Joines and Mr E. Graham.
