It was reported to last night's meeting of the City Council by the Eeserves Committee that most of the small reserves which were being used for vegetable growing had been trenched and re-dug, and would be in excellent condition for the raising of crops next spring. The crops of cabbage planted out during the summer have done indifferently well, owing to the dry season and the ravages of the cabbage fly. About 1000 cabbages had been supplied to the various relief depots and last week 25 bags of potatoes were sent in. It was hoped to supply this quantity for some weeks to come. Quoting a statement attributed to the Et. Hon. J. 6. Coates, that it was intended to provide both sustenance and rent for the unemployed. Messrs J. T. Bell and Co. wrote to yesterday's meeting of the Christefturch Unemployment Committee asking if rent in such eases was payable to the landlord's agents. They added that they had tenants from whom no rent had been received for twelve months. It _ was decided to refer the writer of the letter to the Unemployment Board. IJcporting on gifts received at the Central Relief Depot, Cr. Annie I. fraer told the Christchurch Unemployment Committee that a satisfactory feature was that members of the unemployed, if they had anything to give, were giving* it through the depot. She instanced cases where supplies of pears and parsnips had been so given. Cr. Fraor said that all the depots had been kept supplied with potatoes by the Reserves Department of the Christchurch City Council. The potatoes had been grown on small reserves which had been cultivated by members of the unemployed.
