N At Omoto To-day. ; The Greymouth Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting, which opened on Saturday last, -will be concluded at Omoto to-day. The following horses should raco prominently:—Trial Stakes: Verden, Waraloon; Eailway Handicap: Portray, Limited; President's Handicap: Smithereens; Monastic, Arrowmaid; Eunaiiga Hack: White Doe, Solvear, Grand Acre; Ahaura High-weight: Taku Tama, Coll; Farewell Handicap: Arrowmaid, Coomassie. Avondalo Prospcct3. The Riccarton representatives, Great Star and Grand will bo racing at. the Avondalc Meeting to-day, and both are entitled to serious consideration. - s Sale at Elderslie Stud. The proprietors of the Elderslie Stud have decided to hold a reduction sale on Monday, April 11th, tho offerings to include twelve brood mares,' and the Well-known stallions Tea Tray and Weathorvane. The sale will be held at the Stud, Oamaru, and will be conducted by Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., .and Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., in conjunction. Bamo's Breeding. Tutuna, dam of the Great Autumn Handicap winner, Ramo, was included in Vol. IX. Stud Book, but no returns were made after 1924. She was bred in 1914 and is a chestnut mare by Cronstadt, by Stepniak from Madder (thus a brother to All Bed), from Pa Tuna Saracen from Water Queen, I>y The""imported French' horse, Apre\mont, from Watersprite by Traducer --* from Waterwitch, by Camden from - Mermaid, by King Tom. ,It will thus be seen that Ramo, with Solferino as - his sire, is well loaded with sound .blood on both sides, and it is therefore pot surprising that, although on the ataall side, he possesses the stamina , which he has displayed in all his races. Ramo was bred by Mr S. M. Dixon, of Waimate, who exchanged him as a yearling with Mr H. Preston, for the Bt. ,' Petersburg jumper, Naughty Peter. ■ For India. '• Eaiapoti and Heremia, on arrival in India, will go into the stables conducted by A. Higgins, a well-known Australian trainer, who is now following his profession there. Australia has , a good market for her horses in India, . but New Zealanders seldom ; find ' their way there. The last from tho Dominion that eventually finished up in India was the crack two-year-old Mcrmin. A Small Outlay. The Takanini trainer, E. Pope, was JTery pleased when he saw Speedmint . «any off the Great Northern Oaks. He purchased the filly for the small outlay of 45 guineas for her owner, Mr A. Courtney, and with the winner's portion of Saturday's stake, running Into £SOO, the fil# is-well on the right »ide of the ■ ledger.. Speedmint was bred by the Auckland Stud Company, and is by the imported horse. Catmint from Serita Thurnham. Pope also trained Danae when she won the Oaks ' in 1926, and she also was by Catmint, 'and bre(f by the Auckland Stud Company. A Good Eecord. Bavine, winner of the chief raco at Omoto, Kumara, and Hokitika, in the last week, is now at tho top of his form. He has started five times 'on the present West Coast circuit (says the Greymouth "Star"), and has not been out of a place. After failing as a three-year-old, Kavine commenced to show form with his first race during th-9 next season, and out of 18 starts, he was unplaced on only six occasions, tys record being six firsts, twice sec- ' *nd, and four times third, his stake winBl agß for the season being £587. Last Mason he started on ten. occasions, for two' firsts, a second, and twice third, earning £230 in stakes. This season Bavine has started 16 times, fpr four firsts, a second, and fivo thirds, his "take winnings amounting to £3lB. All hi« successes havo been scored at country Meetings. Each of his three victories r on this circuit have been scored and although he has now been handicapped to carry big weights, in hj« present form he should continue to °»er stout resistance to his opponents.
Antique Case. The third stage of the Antique case will bo reached on April 7th, when the Racing Confercnco appeal judges will meet in Wellington. Originally tho Te Aroha judicial stewards susi>pndcd 11. E. Gray for three months on February 29th for his handling of Antique. Gray appealed to tho Auckland District Committee, and his appeal was upheld. Mr A. P. Wilson, chief stipendiary steward, then took the caso a step further by applying to tho executive committeo of the Conference to havo tho Auckland District-Committee's decision reviewed. The executive committee met on March 18th, and it was then announced that the caso would be directed to the appeal judges. Tho judges appointed are Messrs H. V. O'Leary, C. W. Tringham, and Harold Johnston, all of Wellington. TROTTING NOTES. Reminders. Acceptances for the two trotting events on the Oamaru Jockey Club's programme to be decided next Saturday close at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. Nominations for tho Nelson T.C.'e Autumn Meeting close on Monday at 8 p.m. Nominations for the trotting events on the South Canterbury Jockey Club's programme close on Wednesday, at 0 p.m. Nominations for the trotting events at the Nels.-i J.C.'s Meeting closo at 8 p.m. on Monday. Taranaki Meeting To-day. The following horses are likely to race well in their engagements at the Taranaki T.C.'s Meeting to-day:—Fitz-roy Handicap: Luminato and Keveille; Waitara Handicap: Amy Etawah; Urenui Handicap: Bonny Drift and Daddy Longlegs; Taranaki Handicap: Mr Penalty and Capilano; Moturoa Handicap: Historian and Cracker; Inglewood Handicap: Amy Etawah and Lucky Voyage; Omaka Handicap: Hector and Winshow; Farewell Handicap: Princess Thea and Sister Rose. Trotting Events at Riverton. The third day programme at Kiverton is judiciously padded out by the inclusion cf two light-harness races. Both these events were well patronised, and even after liberal use of tho scratching pen resulted in good fields going to the post. Investors were well inspired, as they found a successful favourite in each race. Wee Scotty, tho winner of the Wakatipu Trot, is a four-year-old gelding by Waverley from Queen's Drive, the dam of Bed Admiral, Black Admiral, Promenade, Bay Admiral, and others. Mocast, the winner of the Ohai Trot, has to be included amongst those bred by' painfully negligent breeders whose interest in the sport seems too superficial to bother about supplying returns to the Stud Book. Local Horses In the North. Canterbury trainers represented at the Taranaki T.C.'s Meeting, which will bo held to-day, are H. Frost with Native Cole and Bonny Drift; J. S. Shaw, Mr Penalty, Gay Paree, and Princess Thea; M. B. Edwards, Historian; and C. S. Donald, with Tini Uria, Sister Hose, Sandown, Astral, and Special Sun. To Eace at Greymouth. V. Alborn left yesterday for the West Coast, taking with him Autowin and Tow,n Crier, who arc engaged in the trotting events on the Greymouth J.C.'s programme to-day. Season Hearing End. Good nominations have been received by the Ashburton Trotting Club'for the minor events at its Autumn Meeting to bo held next Saturday week. This fixture marks the last Meeting to be held in Canterbury until early in June, when the Canterbury Park T.C. will hold its Winter Meeting. Experience Gained. Worthy Merit, who was well supported in his engagements at the Invercargill Meeting last month but who raced unsuccessfully, will make his next appearance at Cheviot next Saturday. As ho had not before faced the starter tho travelling and racing experience ho gained on the southern trip should prove beneficial to him when he is next raced. After a Long Spell. ' Included in the nominations for tho Ashburton Meeting is Editor, who has not been seen out in public for somo considerable time. His last appearance was at the same club's Meeting last June, when ho ran third to Sodium and Arethusa. Member of Prominent Family. An interesting nomination included in the Ashburton list is that of Eaclaim in the Allenton Handicap. Kaelaim is a three-year-old filly by Wrack from Trix Pointer, therefore a sister to Wrackler and Arethusa, but she prefers the trotting gait. This filly was purchased at Mr H. F. Nicoll's dispersal sale held last week for 100 guineas, by F. Holmes. A Useful Three-year-old. , Travis Thorn should bo capable of a good effort in the Dobson Trot Handicap, to be decided to-day at Greymouth, if he races up to his best form, as he is a very promising three-year-old colt. Ho has shown winning form on the Omoto course previously. Reassessments. THE SIMBA MYSTERY. A PROSECUTION COLLAPSES. (UNITEL TRESS ASSOCIATION—BY ELECTRIC TEt.EGB.VPH— COPXBIGHT.) (Ecceivcd April Ist, 7.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 1. The mystery surrounding tho racehorse Simba was intensified at the Redfern Court when the case against Norman McCoy, horse dealer, collapsed. Mr Parker, appearing for tho owner, Mr G. Guest, said tho defendant had told the police that the gelding was left by a man named Twinan, and the owner was perfectly satisfied that the defendant was innocent. He did not proposo to offor evidence against him. The police prosecutor said the police had been left entirely in the dark. "The defendant cannot give us anything definite about this man Twinan, and there are peculiar circumstances about tho case," he added. [Simba, tho New Zealand racehorse, who has caused one sensation after another since his arrival at Sydney last year, culminating in his disappearance, was recovered at Enfield. Police-Serg-eant Small, seeing a horse poking his head out of a stable door, immediately recognised it as the missing racohorse Simba. The horse looked a wreck of tho thoroughbred, with hips and ribs sticking through his skin. A man living in a house adjoining the paddock was arrested. Later, Albert Norman McCoy, horse-dealer and trainer, was charged with having stolen a gelding valued at £ISOO. Ho was remanded on £SOO bail. Simba was purchased from Mr J. S.
