A BAD CRASH.

_—*_ — HOME-MADE MONOPLANE WRECKED. PILOT SERIOUSLY INJURED. (PBESB ASSOCIATION TCLZOBAIC.) FOXTON, March 31. Robin Chrystall, aged 21 years, son of Mr John Chrystall, for a number cf years Mayor of Foxton, crashed in a home-made monoplane at ; the Manawatu Heads this afternoon. Tho machine was successfully flown to the beach bn Monday, and a second attempt was made to-day. It reached a height of 250 feet when it nose-dived over the pilot station when banking and crashed on the foreshore. The pilot was extricated by a fisherman, tho wreckage fortunately not taking fire. Chrystall suffered a fracture of both legs and facial injuries, and was admitted to the Palmerston North Hos : pital in a serious condition. The monoplane, which was completely wrecked, had taken the aviator, working in his spare time, twelve months to build. It had a wing spread of 25 feet and an overall length of 17 feet. It was powered with a special Lawrence two-cylinder aero engine« of 28 horse-power. The wing and tail units were of the Heath-Parasol design, and constructed of regulation material. The fuselage and undercarriage, the aviator's own design, were made of wood. Chrystall had only five, hours' flying to his credit and until Monday had never flown solo.
