OBITUARY.

MR R. HAUPAPA. The death of Mr Kotohiko Haupapa, a member of the Arawa tribe and a well-known resident of Ohinemutu, occurred at Rotorua at the week-end. Mr. Haupapa, who was 32 years of age, was in charge of the Maori Arts School at Ohinemutu. . He was an exceptionally clever Maori carver and had executed work for many, well-known .churches and meeting houses. MR ROBERT IRWIN. Mr Kobert Irwin, at one time headmaster of Queen's Park School, Wanganui, died this week at the age of 60, after a life which had been directed most conscientiously to the cause of education. Mr Irwin was born in Timaru, and served as a pupil teacher in the Timaru Main School. Under the South Canterbury Education Board, he taught at Rangitata and Orton Schools, and moved from there to Lyell, in the Nelson district. Under that Board he was engaged at Havelock, Riwhia, and in two schools in Nelson itself—Nelson Boys' and Hampden Street. In , 1924 he was appointed to the position of head teacher at Queen's Park, succeeding the late Mr C. H. Warden in that post. On account of ill-health he retired from there in 1927. Later, his health improved, and he came back to the service of education in the capacity of a relieving teacher, occupying posts at Nelson, West Coast, Palmerston North, and Taihape, but still retaining his home in Maxwell avenue, Wanga-. nui. He was an ardent worker, for the Presbyterian Church. He is survived by a widow, three sons and three daughters, of a family of eight. The sons are Messrs Leo (Wellington), Boss (Wanganui), and Gordon (Dunedin), and the daughters Mrs Dunlop Brown (Nelson), Mrs Cecil Cornwall (Thames), and Misa Eva Irwin (Wanganui). Mr Irwin's third son, Archie, was a member of the crew of the yacht Windward, which was lost with all hands early last year, on tlio voyage from Chatham Islands to Wellington.
