Federal election campaign the promise to "deal with Communism" was readily given by Mr Lyons and his followers, but now they are in command they find it'a 'very ■ difficult ,one to fulfil; The more-the question is studied the greater are the obstacles that present themselves/ ana the Prime Minister is obviously embarrassed by the demand coming from the Associated. Chambers of Commerce that something should be,done,,without . delay. In' three days' .time the Federal' Parliament will adjourn • the' Easter recess with the pre-election pledge for stern action against disloyalists a task for the future. •, It is likely that Parliament will adjourn for four weeks at least. Assuming that anti-Moscow legislation is.'an the forefront of the programme when the House reassembles—whifeh is ' unlikely—then it will be : May at -; the • earliest before • action ean be taken ■- along the lines that were practically .demanded "by the people:" The anti-Red cry was one of the most popular or .. the election cries, and" there will be a' feeling that the Government Has'failed to keep .faith if "it" does .not-take very decided action. It was" definitely undertaken that all disloyalists would be , deported, and that Communists would be discouraged in every way, yet, during the last, month,, Ahe, friends of the Soviet hare been able to - organise a special delegation that will leave Australia shortly in order' to study , conditions in Russia. . .It has. been said that the funds have been .provided by local Communists, but; the . surprising fact is that the, delegates have all been able to obtain their passports. There is no reason to beljeve that any of them will find difficulty in reentering Australia when their Russian tour is over. ' > Deportation Law. It should be understood. that' the Government is not- entirely without power. There are still countries in the world to which .persons whose : piesen'ce in Australia is undesirable may be sent. It would be a mistake , for disloyalists to assume, that they' : were entirely immune from deportation, though there are grave difficulI ties in the case of Australian-born. troublemakers. The United States and Canada are deporting thousands of people annually, but these,.it is stated, are nnnaturalised foreigners. The laws relating to deportation have an international aspect, and this must not be overlooked - by* the Federal Government. It "is one thing to make wild election promises, and another to put them into effect. In that connexion it is a wonder Mr Lyons did not take lessons from . Mr Lang.
